Dumbbells Sold at Walmart Recalled After Injuring 6 People Due to Plates Dislodging

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recently issued a significant recall for the FitRx SmartBell Quick-Select 5-52.5lbs Adjustable Dumbbells due to safety concerns that could potentially result in serious injuries. This action was prompted by multiple reports indicating that weight plates could become dislodged during use, leading to accidents and injuries.

Between January and November 2024, approximately 50,000 units of these adjustable dumbbells were sold across Walmart stores nationwide for around £100. The CPSC revealed it had received 115 reports detailing incidents where users experienced weight plates coming loose, resulting in at least six confirmed injuries. Reported injuries included broken toes, bruises, contusions, and lacerations.

These adjustable dumbbells allow users to modify weights in increments of 2.5 or 5 lbs by simply turning a handle while the equipment is resting in its storage tray. However, complications can arise once the weights are lifted, resulting in a hazard for those using the product. The CPSC classified this defect as an “impact hazard,” raising alarms over the potential for users to experience significant injury.

Notably, the recalled dumbbells feature a black design with red accents and come complete with handles, weight plates, and a moulded plastic storage tray. Specific serial numbers associated with these products are KK23288361 through KK23388361 and KK207608361 through KK21347836. Tzumi Electronics Inc., based in New York, is the importer of these products, and in light of the recall, the CPSC has advised all customers who purchased the dumbbells to cease their use immediately. Consumers are encouraged to reach out to Tzumi Electronics for a complimentary replacement, including the dumbbell tray. Furthermore, the CPSC advises that the phrase “recalled” should be clearly marked on the dumbbell tray with permanent paint or marker, after which the product can be safely disposed of.

This recall is part of a broader effort by the CPSC to ensure consumer safety. On the same day, the agency also announced a recall of nearly 5,000 youth all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) after a tragic incident involving a six-year-old who lost their life in a crash. The affected products, known as the Rex110 and Sierra110 Youth ATVs, were recalled because they did not meet mandatory safety standards, including speed restrictions for vehicles meant for children aged six and above.
