A tragic incident involving a beloved family pet has arisen in Kansas City, where a 16-year-old cat named Sidney has died after being allegedly taken from his home by an Amazon delivery driver. The heart-wrenching event took place on April 20, when Marsha Reeves, the cat’s owner, discovered that Sidney was missing from her driveway.

Reeves reported that security camera footage captured the moment a female driver exited her vehicle, only to subsequently leave with Sidney, who had been lounging in the driveway. The footage reportedly showed the driver reaching for the cat before driving away. “The footage is quite clear at the moment she got out of her van, and then the next frame shows her pulling off, with Sidney no longer in view,” Reeves explained in an interview with local news outlet FOX4.

Although the delivery driver is not directly employed by Amazon, she works for a partner service. Reeves has stated that her neighbour’s security camera also recorded the incident, although the video is somewhat blurry. Nevertheless, it allegedly shows the driver picking up Sidney before placing him in her vehicle.

In her anguish, Reeves took to Facebook to share the incident, indicating that she had filed reports with both Amazon and the Kansas City Police Department. Sidney’s condition was delicate, requiring specialised food and medication due to his age. “I’ve had him since he was born, and he is 16 years old. What gave them the right to do that?” she lamented in her post.
Following Sidney’s removal from her property, Reeves learned that the driver had taken him to the Grandview Animal Hospital. Unfortunately, the cat eventually found himself at Wayside Waifs, a local animal shelter, then later at Belton Animal Control and finally at KC Pet Project. During this time, Reeves tirelessly sought to locate her cherished pet, facing the heart-wrenching reality that she might find him in poor health.
Despite her attempts to rescue him, Reeves received the devastating news that Sidney had been euthanised due to his frail condition. “I cannot even imagine what he was thinking,” she told FOX4, broken-hearted. “He did not deserve to die on a metal table with strangers poking him; he should have been at home in my arms when he took his last breath.”
Documents detailing Sidney’s medical history indicate that Reeves had provided dedicated care, regularly checking his health, ensuring he received pain medication, and even hand-feeding him when he was too weary to eat on his own. “I knew his time was near, and I just wanted him to be comfortable and at home when it happened,” Reeves added, emphasising the attachment she felt toward her furry companion.
As a result of this distressing sequence of events, Sidney will eventually be returned to his family for cremation, allowing them to provide a fitting farewell. Marsha Reeves firmly believes that both Amazon and the delivery service need to be held accountable for their roles in this incident, noting that she aimed to rectify the situation through her reports to the authorities.
The Kansas City Police Department confirmed that they are investigating the matter and noted that the case remains ongoing. A spokesperson from Amazon expressed regret over the experience, stating, “We sincerely apologise to the family for this unacceptable experience. We’ve been in direct contact with them and are working to make this right.” They also mentioned that they hold their delivery partners to high standards and are taking necessary actions regarding the driver associated with the case.
As the situation continues to unfold, Marsha Reeves is left to grapple with the loss of her cherished pet, while seeking answers and accountability from the parties involved. The case serves as a poignant reminder of the deep bond between pets and their owners, and the profound grief that can arise when that bond is disrupted in such a distressing manner.
