Lizzo Wants to Reclaim the Term ‘Bitch’ as a ‘Declaration of Confidence’ and ‘Unapologetic Self-Love’ with New Album

Lizzo, the acclaimed Grammy-winning artist, has unveiled a new album titled *Bitch*, coinciding with her 38th birthday, which she celebrated on 27 April. The announcement was made via a statement expressing her desire to redefine a term that has often been used derogatorily. The album is slated for release on 5 June, with its title track set to drop on 1 May.

In her statement announcing the project, Lizzo articulated her vision of “reclaiming” the word ‘bitch’ as a symbol of empowerment. “Reclaiming the word Bitch is power,” she explained. The artist emphasised that the term, historically employed to demean women, is being transformed into a declaration of confidence and self-acceptance.

Previously, Lizzo embraced a similar message in her hit “Truth Hurts,” where she boldly declared herself “100% that bitch.” This latest project reflects not only Lizzo’s self-empowerment but is also a homage to fellow female artists who have used the term positively, including Meredith Brooks and Missy Elliott.

“The word has become my favourite,” she continued, adding, “it was only fitting to name my album Bitch because it is an affirmation of my identity.” Lizzo shared a striking album cover on Instagram, featuring an artistic image of her body being held up by a hand, positioned prominently as if extending a middle finger.

Fans can look forward to the title track on 1 May, which incorporates elements of Brooks’ earlier song of the same name. Lizzo has already had a taste of the new material, having debuted the song live during the WeHo Pride festivities in June 2025. This track builds upon her recent single, “Don’t Make Me Love U,” which was released last month along with a music video.

*Bitch* will be Lizzo’s first studio album since last year’s *My Face Hurts from Smiling* mixtape. That project showcased a variety of collaborations with artists such as SZA, Doja Cat, Lil Jon, and Tierra Whack, highlighting Lizzo’s ability to blend various influences in her music.

Interestingly, Lizzo had previously hinted at a different album titled *Love in Real Life*. She released two tracks from this earlier project: its title track and “Still Bad.” Both songs were performed live on *Saturday Night Live* the previous year, alongside “Don’t Make Me Love U.”

Beyond her exciting music trajectory, Lizzo is expanding her creative horizons. She is set to publish her first children’s book, *Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin’*, scheduled for release in September. Additionally, she is preparing to portray Sister Rosetta Tharpe in an upcoming biopic from Amazon MGM, showcasing yet another facet of her artistic capabilities.
