A father from Texas has been charged with capital murder following the tragic death of his seven-week-old son, who succumbed to injuries attributed to blunt force trauma. Christopher Leon Jenkins, aged 26, was arrested last Saturday and is currently being held without bond in the Harris County Jail.

The events leading to the child’s death unfolded on 25th July 2025, when emergency services were dispatched to Jenkins’ apartment after reports of a newborn who was not breathing. Upon arrival, paramedics discovered the infant lying unclothed on a mattress, exhibiting no signs of life and with pink fluid emanating from his mouth. Authorities indicated that the child’s mother had left the baby in Jenkins’ care while she visited a nearby apartment.
Approximately 20 minutes after leaving her son with Jenkins, the mother was alerted when he reportedly knocked on her door to inform her that something was wrong, prompting a call to the emergency services. The child was initially transported to a local hospital where he briefly regained some measure of consciousness but was subsequently transferred to Texas Children’s Hospital, where he tragically passed away a week later.
According to an affidavit reviewed by PEOPLE, a witness informed investigators that they had overheard Jenkins shouting at the baby to “shut up” amidst the infant’s cries, after which the crying ceased abruptly. This testimony has raised alarm bells regarding Jenkins’ treatment of the child.
The affidavit also revealed that Jenkins provided several inconsistent narratives to the police regarding the circumstances surrounding the infant’s injuries. Initially, he claimed that he had left to smoke a cigarette, returning to find the baby unresponsive. In another account, he suggested he might have accidentally dropped the child while feeding him, then changed his story again to assert that he dropped the infant post-bath.
During a subsequent walkthrough at the apartment with investigators, Jenkins attempted to demonstrate what he alleged happened by using a doll. He purportedly threw the doll onto a couch while stating, “That’s how it bounced,” while claiming the baby had also bounced off the bed before hitting the floor.
Jenkins reportedly admitted to authorities that “something just clicked” in his mind when the baby started crying, leading him to feel “a little angry.” He also confessed to shaking the child after picking him up from the ground, which he detailed to the investigators.
An autopsy conducted on the infant confirmed the cause of death as blunt force trauma, with the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences categorising the manner of death as a homicide. These findings have paved the way for the serious charges Jenkins now faces.
At present, he remains in custody as he awaits his first court appearance, slated for Monday. The situation serves as a stark reminder of the grave consequences of child abuse and the urgent need for vigilance and intervention in cases of suspected maltreatment.
