Adnan Syed Avoids Return to Prison as Judge Sentences Him to Time Served for Former Girlfriend’s 2000 Murder

Adnan Syed, known for his involvement in the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, has been in and out of the legal system for over two decades. In a recent turn of events, a judge has ruled that he will not be returning to prison, as per court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

This act applies to individuals who committed crimes as minors and were sentenced before October 1, 2021. Syed was notably 17 at the time of the crime.
In her decision, Judge Schiffer recognised that Syed had no criminal history prior to the murder of Lee and maintained a commendable institutional record during his 23 years in prison. Despite the violent charges against him, including first-degree murder, kidnapping, robbery and false imprisonment, Judge Schiffer deemed Syed non-threatening to the public and sentenced him to time served along with a five-year probation.
The Lee family, represented by counsel David Sanford, responded to the decision in a statement shared with PEOPLE. They indicated that Maryland authorities had recently acknowledged presenting false information in support of Syed’s release a couple of years ago. The family asserted that this new information did not undermine Syed’s guilty verdict and called for him to take responsibility for his actions.

His connection to Lee’s murder, which took place when they were students at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore, has been a long-standing point of contention.
