In a tragic incident that has left the skiing community in mourning, Bernie Rosow, a 45-year-old seasoned skier and long-time employee of Mammoth Mountain, passed away while backcountry skiing in the Sierra Nevada on April 23. Reports indicate that Rosow suffered what appeared to be a sudden cardiac event while hiking up Bloody Mountain, a location he cherished.

Around 9.30 am local time, Rosow and a group of friends were approaching the summit ridge, which stands at approximately 11,400 feet, when he experienced discomfort. According to Christian Pondella, a photographer who was with Rosow that day, everything seemed perfectly normal until Rosow suddenly mentioned pain in his back. “He said, ‘My back hurts, it hurts between my shoulders,’” Pondella recounted. Just moments earlier, the group had been engaged in casual conversation.
Following Rosow’s alarming statement, he sat down on the slope and became unresponsive. His friends immediately contacted emergency services, triggering a large-scale rescue operation. As helicopters and snowmobiles rushed to the scene, his companions initiated CPR in a desperate attempt to keep him alive. Despite their extensive efforts, both before and after the arrival of trained rescuers, the Mono County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Rosow was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rosow was widely recognised for his passion for skiing, being an active member of the Mammoth Mountain community. He had amassed a significant following of over 101,000 individuals on TikTok, where he frequently shared videos of his skiing expeditions. His partner, Amber, expressed her heartbreak on social media, describing Rosow as the love of her life and the favourite person of their eight-year-old son, Alex.
Amber shared that the last weekend, Rosow had informed Alex about the origins of Bloody Mountain’s name, stating that it was derived from the mountain’s distinct red rocks. Reflecting on their time together, Amber noted, “When Bernie and I first met in 2011, he told me he was hiking up Bloody Mountain and yesterday it was still one of his favourites.” In a poignant tribute, she remarked, “Bernie, we will always live in your spirit.”
In her emotional message, Amber thanked the individuals who were with Rosow during his final moments and those who contributed to the rescue efforts. Friends Pondella, Elliott Bernhagen, Danila Shipilov and Amber Henshaw were notably recognised for their assistance that day.
