A young woman from Manchester has shocked her local community with a harrowing story of her battle against lung cancer, a condition she was diagnosed with at just 21 years old. Kayley Boda, now 22, began vaping at the tender age of 15, but her life took a dramatic turn when she began to cough up alarming signs of illness.

Boda recounted the initial symptoms that led her to seek medical advice. She first noticed a brown, grainy mucus, which she initially attributed to her vaping habit. However, as her condition worsened, including the appearance of blood in her cough, her concern grew. “They did an X-ray and found a shadow on my lung,” Boda recalled. Her age initially led doctors to dismiss cancer as a possible diagnosis, with assurances that they were “99% sure it wasn’t cancer.”

Despite the reassurances, further investigations confirmed her worst fears: she was diagnosed with lung cancer and initially classified as stage one. Subsequently, Boda underwent surgery to remove half of her right lung to address the malignancy. However, during the surgery, it was revealed that the cancer had advanced to stage three as it had spread to six surrounding lymph nodes.
The young retail assistant described the aftermath of her surgery and chemotherapy, which had devastating side effects. “I couldn’t lift my head up, I was throwing up blood, I was urinating blood,” she shared, highlighting the toll the treatment took on her body. In a mere four days, she lost a staggering 8 pounds.
In February, Boda received the all-clear after completing her chemotherapy. However, her relief was short-lived. A month later, she returned to her doctors due to respiratory distress and the discovery of a pleural effusion, where fluid accumulates around the lungs. Tragically, during the procedure to drain the fluid, her medical team found that the cancer had returned and had now infiltrated the pleural lining of her lungs. The prognosis was dire, with doctors estimating she has only 18 months left to live.
“This is so rare, and usually something they see in patients that are 80 years old,” Boda stated, expressing her disbelief at her diagnosis. While her doctors cannot definitively attribute her cancer to her vaping history, they did suggest that her habit had not helped her situation.
In light of her diagnosis, Boda has made a concerted effort to quit vaping and has taken on the role of an advocate for others to do the same. “Before the diagnosis, I was very naive and thought something like this could never happen to me,” she admitted. Since then, she has encouraged her partner, mother, and friends to give up vaping, urging others to consider the potential health consequences. “Stay off the vapes, they will catch up with you,” she warned.
As her health battle continues, Boda’s family has taken the initiative to set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for a specialised treatment in Germany, which they hope could help prolong her life. The family is committed to supporting Boda through her journey and seeking every possible avenue for treatment.
Kayley Boda’s story serves as a stark reminder of the unexpected health risks associated with vaping, particularly among younger demographics, and emphasises the importance of awareness and education around tobacco alternatives. With her advocacy and personal testimony, she aims to dissuade others from following a similar path, highlighting that the consequences can be devastating, even for the young and seemingly healthy.
The plight of Kayley Boda has ignited discussions in her community about vaping, cancer awareness, and the urgent need for preventative measures. As she fights against the odds, Boda hopes that sharing her experience will save others from the devastating reality she now faces.
