Ohio Grandmother, Mother Charged in Death of 9-Month-Old Girl Who Ingested Fentanyl

A tragic incident involving the death of a nine-month-old girl has led to the arrests of an Ohio grandmother and her daughter. Taletha Kropp, aged 43, and her 20-year-old daughter, Leeonna Cherry, were taken into custody on April 23. The allegations stem from the death of Cherry’s child, Makayla Huff, earlier this year.

The young girl lost her life in February, reportedly after ingesting a fatal amount of fentanyl while in the care of her grandmother. Authorities received emergency calls on February 19, reporting that Huff was unresponsive at a residence in Toledo. Efforts to revive the infant were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead shortly before 5 p.m. after being rushed to a local hospital.

An investigation revealed that a lethal dose of fentanyl was detected in the toddler’s blood and stomach. The Lucas County Coroner’s Office concluded that the cause of death was acute fentanyl toxicity, categorising the manner of death as a homicide. An autopsy report indicated the immediate lethal effects of fentanyl, suggesting that Huff would have succumbed within seconds of ingestion.

Eyewitness testimony has suggested that Cherry was aware of her mother’s substance use, particularly the presence of heroin laced with fentanyl. These revelations led to serious charges against both women. Kropp has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and endangering children, while Cherry faces charges of obstructing justice.

In a court appearance on April 24, Kropp was assigned a bond of £1 million. Meanwhile, Cherry was released after posting her bond on the same day. The gravity of the situation has caught the attention of local authorities, including the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office Drug Abuse Response Team (DART).

Lieutenant Steve Rogers from DART noted that incidents such as this are not common but highlighted the critical need for responsible drug storage, particularly in households with children. He urged parents and guardians to keep all medications and substances securely out of reach to prevent avoidable tragedies. “Proper storage and making sure that it’s secure is key to prevent these tragedies from happening,” Rogers stated, addressing the wider implications of such cases.

Both Kropp and Cherry are scheduled to appear in court again on April 30 as the case unfolds. As the community grapples with this shocking event, local authorities and advocacy groups are encouraging those struggling with substance abuse to seek help. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers resources through its helpline for individuals in need.
