As the UK experiences an unseasonably warm winter, health officials are raising alarms about a significant surge in tick populations, which is resulting in a record number of visits to emergency departments due to tick bites. This month alone has seen 85 cases reported, the highest number recorded in a decade, according to data sourced from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The increase in tick activity can be attributed to climate change, which creates favourable breeding conditions for these insects. In addition, a reduction in wildlife hosts, such as deer and rodents, has intensified the risks for humans and pets. Experts warn that this combination has contributed to a concerning rise in tick-borne diseases.

Joellen Lampman, tick integrated pest management coordinator at Cornell University, commented on the troubling trend, stating, “We are certainly seeing more ticks in more places and carrying more and more diseases.” Lampman also noted that with fewer wildlife hosts available, it is now more likely that ticks will latch onto humans or domestic animals as they navigate outdoor spaces.

The CDC has highlighted that ticks are capable of transmitting at least 15 different viruses. Among the most common are Lyme disease, babesiosis, Powassan virus, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Symptoms of these infections can include fever, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches. Lyme disease, in particular, is known for causing distinctive rashes.
In recent years, Michigan has seen alarming statistics, with nearly a 170% increase in Lyme disease cases reported over the past five years. New Jersey health officials recently issued a warning regarding Lyme disease, indicating that 2024 has seen a whopping 6,256 cases in the state. With the peak season for ticks still ahead, health authorities are urging the public to take precautionary measures.
Thomas Hart from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health advised the public on best practices to avoid tick bites. He noted that wearing protective clothing is paramount — he opts for light-coloured garments with his trousers tucked into his socks, providing a barrier against tick bites. Additionally, he advocates for the use of repellents containing DEET to deter these disease-carrying insects.
The National Institutes of Health suggests further strategies for minimising tick exposure, such as choosing outfits that cover arms and legs fully, as well as sticking to the centre of trails while hiking to avoid areas where ticks are more likely to inhabit, such as overgrown shrubs. The emphasis is placed on the importance of thorough tick checks after spending time outdoors.
In the unfortunate event of encountering a tick, experts advise using a pair of tweezers to gently pull the tick straight out of the skin, ensuring the head does not remain embedded. It is crucial to perform this action carefully, as the longer a tick is attached, the higher the risk of transmission for tick-borne pathogens. Fortunately, medical experts indicate that ticks often need to be attached for 24 to 36 hours to successfully infect a person, giving individuals a window of opportunity for safe removal.
Despite the alarming rise in tick populations and related diseases, individuals can easily adopt preventative measures to protect themselves and their families. As the warmer months approach, continued awareness and caution will be essential in mitigating the risks associated with tick bites and the potentially severe illnesses they can cause. It is vital for everyone to stay informed about tick activity in their local areas and to take proactive steps while enjoying the outdoors.
