Renowned singer and songwriter, Judy Collins, is sharing her reflections on the passing of her husband, Louis Nelson, after a remarkable 46 years of togetherness. Nelson, an esteemed industrial designer famous for creating the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., succumbed to cancer at the age of 88 on December 4th. Collins, widely known for hits like “Both Sides Now,” is navigating her grief by unveiling a new collection of poetry that was conceptualised by Nelson himself. In an interview with NBC New York on March 6th, the 85-year-old Collins expressed, “This is part of my grief group, because I lost my husband three months ago. And we had the most wonderful life. We had 46 years together, and that’s very good for an old hippie like me.”

During their time together, Collins and Nelson had an enduring and inspiring relationship. Collins fondly reminisced about a conversation from 2016 where Nelson encouraged her to write a poem every day for 365 days, culminating in a whole book of poetry. This endeavor resulted in the creation of the forthcoming book titled “Sometimes It’s Heaven,” slated for release on March 25th. Their love story began in 1978 at a fundraiser for the Equal Rights Amendment, a meeting that was initially unplanned as Collins shared that she had not been keen on meeting anyone new following a previous divorce. Fate intervened, leading to their marriage in 1996.

Despite their differences – with Collins describing herself as someone who could “trash a room” quickly while Nelson was exceptionally organised – the couple found harmony in their unique dynamics. Collins also disclosed a somewhat unconventional secret to their successful marriage: separate sleeping spaces, jokingly attributing it to Nelson’s snoring. Together, they enjoyed various activities like walking, watching movies and theatre, visiting museums, and socialising with friends. Collins highlighted Nelson’s qualities of being present, supportive, determined, and persistent, all of which enriched their bond.
Having turned 86 on May 1, Collins is commemorating her 85th birthday year with a concert in New York City on March 8, featuring renowned artists like Stephen Stills and Paula Cole. The singer expressed her excitement for the event, stating, “It’s my birthday all year, that’s what’s going on. And 85 is the new 27, I’m telling you.” Throughout her career, Collins has touched the hearts of many with her music, and now, amidst personal loss, she continues to inspire with her resilience and creativity.
Collins and Nelson’s enduring love story serves as a testament to the strength and beauty of long-lasting partnerships. Their journey, filled with love, support, and mutual respect, stands as a poignant reminder of the profound impact of a deep connection between two individuals. As Collins navigates the realm of grief and honours the memory of her beloved husband through poetry and music, her unwavering spirit shines through, illuminating a path of hope and healing for others facing similar challenges. The legacy of love and collaboration that Collins and Nelson built together will undoubtedly endure, leaving an indelible mark on all those who have been touched by their story.
