A couple from New Hampshire faced a daunting health emergency just days before their long-anticipated destination wedding, yet managed to tie the knot as planned. The story of Tom Mahan and his fiancée, Jen, serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of listening to one’s body and advocating for proper medical care.

Tom, 31, began experiencing severe pain in his Achilles heel in late November 2025. As the months progressed, the discomfort intensified, transforming into a relentless pain that disrupted his daily life. Initially, he sought help from a general practitioner who suspected the issue was related to his work as a truck driver, frequently on the road. The doctor recommended physical therapy, which Tom pursued diligently for several weeks.

However, the therapy yielded little improvement, and with the pain becoming unbearable, Tom sought a follow-up consultation. Unfortunately, each visit resulted in the same reassurances: the pain was simply part of the healing process. By January, Tom’s symptoms worsened significantly; his leg was swollen from the calf to the thigh, and everyday tasks became increasingly difficult.

Realising that something was seriously wrong, Tom took matters into his own hands. “I knew something wasn’t right,” he explained. He insisted on further investigation and ultimately received a referral to a specialist, who advised imaging studies to explore the possibility of a more serious issue.
The results confirmed Tom’s fears: he had developed deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a potentially life-threatening condition associated with blood clots. He was swiftly admitted to Parkland Medical Center in Derry on February 19, a mere five days before his scheduled wedding in Jamaica.
Dr. Devin Keefe, the chief of emergency medicine at Parkland, immediately ordered a specialised ultrasound for Tom. It quickly revealed a significant blood clot situated in his lower right leg. Recognising the urgency, Dr. Keefe coordinated with a cardiologist and the hospital’s care team to formulate a treatment plan. The procedure to remove the clot was completed in just about an hour, and Tom remained awake throughout.
“I felt a sense of relief almost instantly. The pressure was gone,” Tom recounted after the successful thrombectomy. His prompt recognition of the symptoms and insistence on further medical attention were pivotal in averting a potentially catastrophic situation. According to Dr. Hyder, a member of the treatment team, “Timing is critical when it comes to a clot,” and Tom’s swift action was instrumental in ensuring a positive outcome.
As the couple prepared for their wedding, Jen initially feared they would need to delay their plans. However, the medical team at Parkland gave Tom the all-clear for travel the day after his procedure. “If I had gotten on the plane without knowing about the blood clot, being seated for such a long flight, who knows what could have happened?” he said, expressing his relief at having taken the precautionary measures.
The experience has left a lasting impression on the couple, who are now able to start their married life without the shadow of health concerns hanging over them. “You know your body best,” Tom stated, offering advice to others facing medical challenges. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek a second opinion.” The couple is deeply grateful to the medical staff at Parkland for their diligence and care during a critical moment.
Reflecting on their ordeal, both Tom and Jen are aware that, while their wedding may have been at stake, they prioritised health above all. They credit the medical team for facilitating not only Tom’s recovery but also the successful execution of their wedding plans.
Ultimately, the couple expressed immense gratitude for the care and expertise they received, acknowledging that the intervention saved the day and allowed them to embrace the beginning of their life together as a married couple. Their story highlights the importance of listening to one’s body and the crucial role of medical professionals in ensuring that patients receive the care they need in a timely manner.
