Young Dad Missing for 5 Days After Being Swept Away by ‘Extremely Powerful’ Currents While Fishing with Family

A man is reported missing after being swept into the ocean while fishing with his family at Shelly Beach Wharf, located within New Zealand’s Kaipara Harbour. The incident occurred on Sunday, April 19, when strong currents pulled the young father away from the fishing pier while he was attempting to retrieve equipment.

Witnesses described the man as a proficient swimmer, but the force of the tides proved overwhelming. Family members attempted a rescue by entering the water with a flotation device, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 1:00 PM local time, prompting a swift response from the police and coastguard.

Mark Dennis, a representative of the Auckland Council’s Rodney Local Board, provided insight into the challenging conditions of the harbour. He emphasised that Kaipara Harbour is the largest tidal harbour in the Southern Hemisphere, noting that currents can become particularly intense during tidal changes. This geographic feature significantly elevates the risks associated with fishing in the area.

Following the incident, search operations were initiated by local police, with the coastguard on hand and providing support with their Winston Rescue boat. The Royal New Zealand Navy also contributed to the efforts, dispatching a hydrographic team to assist in the search.

In a show of respect and adherence to local customs, a rāhui—a temporary Māori restriction on the area—was established from April 20 to April 23. This act of cultural significance is employed following serious incidents, serving as a mark of reverence for those directly affected.

As the search continues, Dennis reported that police divers have concluded their operations but affirmed the ongoing nature of the effort to locate the missing man. He noted that aerial searches are expected to take place in the coming days, while local residents and fishermen are remaining vigilant in their operations within the surrounding waters.

Dennis highlighted the generosity of local residents, who provided nourishment—referred to as kaі, a Māori term for food—as well as clothing and shelter. He illustrated the situation as a poignant example of community solidarity, bringing together police, local Māori groups, and council members to support the distressed family.

Despite the circumstances, locals have found ways to bolster the family’s spirits, ensuring they have what they need as they navigate this traumatic ordeal. The family was seen remaining in the area, gathering strength and comfort from those around them before departing on Thursday.
