A 21-year-old woman from the United Kingdom, Lucy Dunford, is on a long and challenging path to recovery after being diagnosed with a rare spinal stroke. Initially, she believed she was simply suffering from back pain, but what began as a minor discomfort quickly escalated into a catastrophic medical emergency that left her paralysed from the neck down.

At just 19 years old, what Lucy described as a “simple backache” took a dramatic turn when it developed into severe, stabbing pains in her shoulder blades. Her sister, Abbie Dunford, recounted the events in a GoFundMe campaign set up to assist Lucy’s recovery. Lucy deteriorated rapidly, requiring hospitalisation due to the unbearable nature of her pain. After spending approximately three weeks in hospital, she received the devastating diagnosis of a spinal stroke on her 20th birthday.

Spinal strokes are notably rare, comprising only about 1.25% of all stroke cases reported, according to the Brain and Spine Foundation. They occur when the blood supply to the spinal cord is disrupted, leading to significant tissue damage and nerve impulses being blocked. Although Lucy was left needing a permanent catheter and experienced severe spasms, she retains some limited mobility in her arms.

Life has changed drastically for Lucy since the stroke. Each day is fraught with challenges, as even the most basic tasks have become difficult, if not impossible. “Everything I used to love about my life has been snatched away from me,” she remarked, highlighting the profound impact of her condition. Activities that many take for granted now involve substantial obstacles; for instance, Lucy struggles with involuntary spasms that threaten her safety in a wheelchair.
Furthermore, Lucy expressed the emotional toll of her illness, stating that she often feels like a burden to friends and others when she is out in public, as she occasionally requires assistance. This feeling is compounded by her inability to enjoy a day of rest without the risk of developing pressure sores, making everyday outings a source of anxiety.
Before her health crisis, Lucy was an active young woman — frequenting the gym five times a week, prioritising a clean diet, and remaining physically engaged in daily life. The complete turnabout in her circumstances has been both shocking and deeply disheartening for not just Lucy, but her family as well.
In response to the challenges at hand, Abbie launched the GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for Lucy’s vital recovery, including ongoing physiotherapy and intensive treatments aimed at managing her symptoms. As of now, the campaign has successfully raised approximately £2,937 of its £3,500 target, enabling the Dunford family to begin addressing Lucy’s substantial medical needs.
Abbie and the rest of the Dunford family are determined to help Lucy regain some sense of normality in her life, despite the long road ahead. They are united in their efforts to improve her quality of life and assist her in adapting to the changes brought about by her spinal stroke.
As Lucy continues her recovery journey, she knows that having the support of her family and community will play a crucial role in her rehabilitation. Though her condition presents daily hurdles, she remains resolute in her pursuit of regaining independence and enjoying life once again.
