A couple from Florida has made significant progress in their legal battle following the distressing revelation that their recently born baby was not their biological child. Tiffany Score and Steven Mills, who have been embroiled in a lawsuit against the Fertility Center of Orlando, announced that they have identified the biological parents of their daughter, Shea. Although they have resolved this aspect of their case, they emphasised that new challenges remain.

In a statement released through their attorney, Jack Scarola, the couple confirmed, “The results of testing delivered to us today confirm that our baby’s genetic parents have been identified.” However, they have chosen to keep the identities of these parents confidential, stressing their commitment to respecting their privacy. “This ends one chapter in our heartbreaking journey, but it raises new issues that will have to be resolved,” they added.
The story began last year when Score and Mills sought assistance from the Fertility Center of Orlando to help start their family. They successfully created and stored three viable embryos. During a procedure in April, Score was implanted with what she believed to be one of these embryos. Throughout her pregnancy, there were no indications to the couple that anything was amiss. However, upon delivering their daughter on 11 December 2022, they noticed that the infant bore no resemblance to either parent.
In light of the situation, Score and Mills have expressed their deep love for Shea, who is now four months old, stating, “Only one thing is as absolutely certain today as it was on the day our daughter was born — we will love and will be this child’s parents forever.” They have discussed their moral obligation to seek out Shea’s genetic parents, believing that their daughter deserves answers regarding her origins.
While they have identified the biological parents, Score and Mills have conveyed that their ordeal is far from over. They remain concerned about the whereabouts of their own embryos, which they believe are still unaccounted for. “Questions about the disposition of our own embryos are still unanswered and are even more unlikely to ever be answered,” they lamented.
Their attorney, Jack Scarola, further highlighted unresolved issues, including the fate of the couple’s embryos. He noted that the ongoing legal proceedings will delve into these matters, but also stressed the importance of seeking compensation for the emotional turmoil and expenses endured by the couple throughout this ordeal.
In a previous statement, Score and Mills indicated their hope that taking legal action would enable them to “begin living more freely” and focus on celebrating the arrival of their daughter. They stated, “Shea is completely innocent and so undeserving of any of this.”
The Fertility Center of Orlando has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the couple’s claims or the lawsuit. Recently, the clinic announced it would be closing its doors, citing a transition to a new facility entirely.
