In a candid conversation with i-D Magazine, South African singer-songwriter Tyla Laura Seethal, known simply as Tyla, opened up about the importance of self-love and body positivity. During an event celebrating the Grammys, she shared her unique perspective on confidence-building and her personal journey with self-acceptance.

At the EPIC Records x Hennessy Grammys Party held at Sunset Tower in Los Angeles, Tyla emphasised the significance of self-reflection as a woman. “As a woman, it’s so important to look at yourself. I know it’s hard; it’s hard for me too sometimes,” she explained. This statement sets the tone for a deeper exploration of her self-love practices, one of which involves dancing in front of a mirror.

Tyla elaborated on her mirror dancing habit, stating, “I dance in the mirror a lot… without clothes.” This ritual serves as an affirmation of her self-worth and an acknowledgment of her own body. Despite the challenges many women face regarding body image, Tyla advocates for embracing one’s individuality. “You’re not always going to love everything about yourself. But you are who you are and you’re going to be that forever, so best to embrace it,” she said.

The 24-year-old artist also reflected on her childhood insecurities, revealing that growing up, she struggled with body image issues. “I always felt very slim. I didn’t know what to do with [my body],” Tyla admitted. Her experiences were further complicated by the environment in which she was raised, attending a predominantly white school where she often compared herself to her peers. “Girls had longer hair than me, or certain hairstyles that I couldn’t do,” she recalled.
Since releasing her self-titled debut album in 2024, which garnered her the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance for the hit single “Water,” Tyla has continued to rise in the music industry. In February this year, she received another Grammy for her track “Push 2 Start,” included on the expanded version of her debut album. This recognition demonstrates her growing influence and talent within the music scene.
Looking ahead, Tyla is set to release her anticipated second studio album, titled “A-Pop,” later this year. In addition to her solo work, she recently joined Cardi B on the Little Miss Drama Tour after collaborating on the song “Nice Guy.” Cardi B, appreciating Tyla’s energy, expressed her gratitude on social media, saying, “Tyla, babyyy!! You bring the perfect energy to any stage, thank you so much for bringing it to mine.”
Tyla’s journey into the spotlight is accompanied by her distinctive style and personality, as seen during her attendance at various high-profile events. One of her notable appearances was at the Miu Miu fashion show during Paris Fashion Week in March 2026, further solidifying her status as a rising star in both the music and fashion industries.
In addition to her performances and public appearances, Tyla shared her backstage essentials in a prior interview with PEOPLE, highlighting her desire for a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere before going on stage. “I have a Le Labo candle, I have ginger, I have Tabasco sauce, I have pineapple juice. I love pineapple juice so much,” she admitted. She also mentioned enjoying a glass of champagne after successful shows, reflecting her celebratory spirit.
As Tyla continues to navigate her career and personal growth, her message of self-acceptance resonates strongly with many, particularly young women facing similar struggles. With her remarkable achievements and candid approach to discussing body image, she is not only carving a place for herself in the music world but also inspiring a new generation to embrace their identities with confidence.
