Musician Clayton Johnson has opened up about his past relationship with Lana Del Rey during a recent appearance on the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast. Johnson, who was previously engaged to the “Summertime Sadness” singer, expressed his genuine happiness for Del Rey’s recent marriage to Jeremy Dufrene, which took place in September 2024.

In a candid conversation recorded on April 2 and released on April 22, Johnson conveyed his heartfelt sentiments about Del Rey’s new chapter in life. He stated, “Obviously, she’s married now. And I think that when you love somebody, and it comes from a pure place, and she’s somebody that I loved and I love, for her to find her person and for her to be as happy as she is, like she is glowing, nothing could make me happier for her.” Although he admitted that the situation might bring a tinge of sadness, he emphasised that true love should foster happiness for the other person, regardless of personal feelings.
Johnson and Del Rey’s engagement was first reported in December 2020. However, they eventually ended their relationship, and Del Rey moved on to marry Dufrene in Des Allemandes, Louisiana. Despite their breakup, Johnson maintains a high level of respect toward the singer, insisting that he has “nothing but amazing things to say” about her. While he refrained from divulging intricate details of their past, he did share that they had initially crossed paths at a church before reconnecting during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reflecting on their relationship, Johnson recalled the time they spent FaceTiming during lockdown, stating, “It was really easy to connect. We had a month of just FaceTiming, and I feel like we really became best friends over that time.” Their emotional bond quickly solidified, leading to an engagement that Johnson described as a fast progression, influenced by the unique circumstances of the pandemic.
“The pandemic had a way of accelerating relationships,” he explained. “I think COVID was a lot like dog years; one month in COVID time is really like one year in the real world.” Despite the rapid development of their relationship, he conveyed a sense of rightness about their connection during that period.
Following their separation, Johnson described their dynamic as a “working relationship” where they intermittently explored their connection while engaging with others. Despite these attempts, it became evident that they were not destined to remain together.
Johnson acknowledged that his past with Del Rey holds a significant and meaningful place in his life. “It’s always going to be a huge and really impactful chapter,” he stated. His association with Del Rey extends beyond their romance; they collaborated musically, notably releasing the single “Tough” in July 2024, a piece co-written with several other musicians. Johnson reflected on the experience as a fulfilling artistic achievement, highlighting the complexities of blending personal feelings with professional success.
Additionally, he addressed his decision to participate in a reality television show. Johnson clarified that his appearance on the recently cancelled season of The Bachelorette was not motivated by resentment toward Del Rey, despite knowing her fondness for reality TV. “I truly don’t have any place in my heart for any sort of revenge or hate,” he asserted. “This was for me and this was for my journey. So it had nothing to do with that whatsoever.”
As Johnson continues to navigate his own career, he remains supportive of Del Rey’s happiness and successes, a sentiment that speaks to the enduring connection from a shared past. For both artists, the journey of love and respect appears to be a pivotal theme, resonating through their personal and professional lives.
