Steven Hamill is making strides in raising awareness about penile cancer after his own troubling experience with the disease. At just 26 years of age, Hamill encountered a life-altering situation when he was diagnosed with aggressive penile cancer, requiring the amputation of four inches of his penis. His journey, marked by misdiagnoses and severe symptoms, is now a source of education for others regarding this rare form of cancer.

Hamill’s ordeal began when he noticed swelling and subsequently discovered blood during what he described as an ordinary morning routine. “I woke up one morning and, as every man does, I went for the morning wee, and it was very swollen,” Hamill recounted in an interview on ITV’s This Morning. Initially dismissing the symptoms as something trivial, he soon faced a frightening reality when he experienced significant bleeding in his kitchen.
Despite his alarming symptoms, medical professionals initially dismissed Hamill’s concerns due to his age. He was told that penile cancer primarily affects men over 50, leading to a misdiagnosis of balanitis, a bacterial infection. Given a steroid cream to manage the infection, Hamill felt a sense of relief, believing that his cancer fears had been alleviated. However, as the bleeding ceased, unbearable pain began to plague him.

“The only way I can describe this pain is, if I had a needle and I was just poking at the head consistently every second, like there was no respite,” he explained. This relentless discomfort prompted Hamill to seek medical help yet again but not before he faced a troubling situation at his sister’s wedding. Choosing to manage the pain with adult incontinence pads, he persevered through the event with the help of “a really good relationship” with pink gin.
Eventually, a visit to a urologist led to a referral to a cancer hospital, where he was initially informed he would need a circumcision. However, following the procedure, doctors delivered the devastating news that he required more extensive surgery due to the aggressive nature of his cancer. Hamill likened the tumour’s destruction to “a banana with a bite taken out of it,” illustrating the severity of his condition.
Facing the grim reality of his diagnosis, Hamill was informed by his doctors that his life was about to change dramatically due to the aggressive disease. He shared, “There was a moment where even the surgeons thought this guy probably won’t make it.” Fortunately, the surgical team was able to remove the cancerous tissue, but the experience left lasting impacts on his life.
In the aftermath of surgery, Hamill expressed a sense of gratitude despite the physical changes. He acknowledged that while he had lost a significant portion of his penis, he still retained enough function to maintain a fulfilling personal life. “I’ve had my child. Life’s just great, just aesthetically a bit strange,” he said, reflecting on his resilience.
While navigating post-surgery life, Hamill has also faced the complexities of dating and relationships. He quipped that medical professionals do not provide guidance on how to discuss such life-altering surgeries with potential partners. Nonetheless, the experience has fostered deeper connections for him, encouraging intimacy and open communication. “I’m learning my body again and learning how to communicate,” he noted, suggesting that this journey has shaped him into a better person.
Now, seven years since his initial diagnosis, Hamill embraces a new perspective on life. He has become an advocate for penile cancer awareness, enduring the occasional cruelty of online jokes and memes. While some have mocked him with nicknames like “Stumpy,” Hamill responds to these comments with humour, recognising that they serve an important purpose in raising awareness about a largely overlooked condition. “Cheers, but at least now you know penile cancer exists,” he remarked, exemplifying his commitment to education and advocacy.
Through his experiences, Steven Hamill hopes to enlighten others about the realities of penile cancer and the importance of early diagnosis. His story underscores the necessity of awareness and action regarding rare forms of cancer, particularly among younger men who may overlook their symptoms due to misconceptions surrounding age and health risks. Hamill’s ongoing efforts to inform and educate others are not only a testament to his resilience but also a crucial step in combating the stigma surrounding this often-taboo subject.
