A 61-year-old man from Massachusetts tragically lost his life while hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire over the weekend. Kent Wood, who was reported missing on April 21, was initially reported to have embarked on a camping and hiking trip but met with unfortunate circumstances due to sudden winter weather conditions.

Wood, a resident of West Roxbury, Massachusetts, arrived at the Lafayette Campground in Lincoln, New Hampshire, on Friday, April 17. He had planned to enjoy a weekend of outdoor activities but encountered complications when winter weather resumed over the weekend. Initial conditions were calm, with clear skies and mild temperatures, leading many to underestimate the impending shift.
However, as Saturday progressed, changing weather patterns proved challenging. Snowfall of three to five inches blanketed the mountain pass, creating treacherous hiking conditions that could have caught Wood off guard. Concern for his safety arose after his family lost contact with him that same afternoon and subsequently failed to reach him over the next two days.
Alarmed for his well-being, Wood’s family reported him missing when they noticed the lack of communication. Upon receiving the report, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, alongside other agencies, initiated a search operation on Tuesday. This effort was further bolstered by the involvement of a U.S. Army National Guard helicopter, which assisted in locating the hiker.
Rescuers focused their search on the areas surrounding Lonesome Lake and Kinsman Pond, where Wood was believed to have been hiking. Sadly, later that same evening, at approximately 7:41 pm, the search teams located Wood’s body about five and a half miles from his parked vehicle on the Kinsman Pond Trail in Franconia Notch, a renowned mountain pass within the region.
Following the recovery, first responders worked through the night to transport Wood’s body down the trail, successfully evacuating him at around 1:10 am the next day. Local authorities expressed their sorrow at the incident and underscored the importance of being adequately prepared for changing weather, particularly in mountainous terrains known for their unpredictability.
