Country music star Mark Chesnutt has candidly discussed his battle with alcoholism, revealing that he reached a point in his life where he consumed a handle of vodka daily. The 62-year-old singer’s struggles with alcohol intensified following back surgery in 2021, but he has since turned his life around and is now living a healthier lifestyle after achieving sobriety.

In a recent interview on the Big D & Bubba radio show, Chesnutt opened up about the dark phase of his life marked by heavy drinking. He described how his consumption escalated from beer to whiskey, then to wine, and ultimately to vodka. At his lowest, he found himself drinking substantial amounts of vodka every day, which he credits with nearly costing him his life. “I quit drinking, and that was a big deal for me. It just about killed me,” he stated, emphasising the severity of his situation.
Chesnutt’s problems with alcohol became particularly pronounced after his back surgery, during which he faced physical limitations and emotional discomfort. To cope with his pain and misery, he turned to alcohol, ultimately forming a troubled dependency. “I graduated to the vodka, and started hitting the vodka really hard,” Chesnutt said, revealing the intensity of his struggle.

Reflecting on his journey towards sobriety, Chesnutt expressed relief and gratitude for his current situation. He now finds himself in a space where he can socialize in bars without feeling the need for alcoholic beverages. The singer stated, “I feel so good now, man. I wake up every day and thank the good lord that I’m still kicking.” His newfound sense of well-being is evident, even as he deals with the after-effects of a quadruple bypass surgery that he underwent in June 2022.
Despite experiencing some physical limitations due to age and surgery, Chesnutt maintains a positive outlook on life. He acknowledges the natural slowing down that comes with growing older, but refuses to let it dampen his spirits. “I know when you get older, you slow down a little bit… but I don’t feel like that,” he declared, highlighting his renewed energy and enthusiasm for life.
Chesnutt, who is a devoted family man with three sons and a wife named Tracie, reflected on his youth and acknowledged that he wasn’t a “functioning drunk” in his earlier years. Rather, he described himself simply as “just a drunk.” This self-awareness gives insight into the depth of his transformation and underlines the significance of his recovery journey.
In a recent health scare, Chesnutt was hospitalised shortly before a scheduled performance with the popular band Alabama. Medical testing revealed issues related to low sodium and high blood pressure, but he was discharged the following day, indicating that he remains focused on his health.
Looking ahead, Chesnutt is currently on tour and has numerous performances lined up until late August, showcasing his dedication to his music career and fans. As he continues to share his story, he hopes to inspire others who may be facing similar struggles with substance abuse.
