A 21-year-old man from Overland Park, Kansas, has been charged with attempted murder following a harrowing incident aboard a boat in Hawaii. Avery Nissen was apprehended on Thursday, 16 April, after he allegedly stabbed the vessel’s captain during a snorkeling excursion off the Kona coast.

According to a statement from the Hawaii Police Department, the incident occurred while the boat was returning to Honokōhau Harbor. At approximately 3:21 p.m., police received reports of a stabbing onboard and dispatched officers to the scene. When they arrived, both Nissen and the 62-year-old victim, identified as Stan Lurbiecki, were on the boat, along with other passengers who reportedly intervened to restrain Nissen during the attack.
Lurbiecki, a seasoned professional in the boating industry, recounted the shocking events to local media outlet Big Island Now. He explained that he had invited Nissen, his mother, and a sibling on the boat for a snorkelling trip. While Lurbiecki’s mother and sibling took to the water, Nissen remained on board. Following the attack, Lurbiecki was swiftly taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition. He confirmed that he has received multiple blood transfusions in the wake of the incident.
