Reports indicate that a tournament participant, a teenager, suffered significant injuries, including broken ribs and a punctured lung. An adult passenger on one of the vessels was hospitalised overnight due to the severity of their injuries, while others involved were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
This tournament was organised by the Student Angler Federation and hosted approximately 50 teams of high school students at the Orwood Resort. According to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, the collision transpired roughly three-quarters of a mile south of the marina, where boats had set off for the competition.
As details of the incident emerged, witnesses described that one of the boats had come to a stop in the water when it was struck by another vessel. Emergency responders from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District were notified of the situation at around 6:55 AM and promptly conducted a water rescue operation.

Boat captain John Wolfe, who observed the collision, recounted how one vessel slowed down as required in a designated no-wake zone, while the following boat failed to reduce its speed adequately. Another competitor, Rory Castle, described the aftermath, stating that the collision sent one of the boats soaring into the air, resulting in extensive damage and injuries among its occupants.
Nathan Mundy, another boater in the vicinity, remarked on the severity of the incident, highlighting the distress of those on board the damaged vessel. It was reported that three individuals were ejected from their seats, their life vests deploying as they fell into the water. Thankfully, they were able to swim ashore, but those who remained in the boat sustained the most severe injuries.
