Achieng Agutu, a model and influencer, has emerged as a powerful voice for women seeking representation and inspiration in a world often lacking diversity. Originally from Kenya, Agutu moved to Indiana at the age of 16, where she experienced a profound culture shock. In an interview with PEOPLE, she recounted her struggles with finding individuals in media who mirrored her experiences, stating, “I didn’t see much representation of women who had similar life experiences that I had in social media or the media in general.”

Realising the need for change, Agutu decided to take matters into her own hands. “I couldn’t wait for another Lupita Nyong’o to pop up,” she said. Instead of waiting for someone else to pave the way, she embarked on a journey to become the representation she desired. Through sharing videos from her college dorm, she gradually cultivated a following, adopting the titles of “confidence queen” and “internet bestie” for her millions of followers.

Reflecting on her online journey, Agutu noted that creating her platform has been both a healing experience and a means to celebrate womanhood. She expressed excitement about the interesting ways she has experienced personal growth, stating, “It has made me experience life in womanhood and girlhood and the powers that come with being independent.” Her hope is that her platform not only serves as a personal outlet but also inspires others in their quests for self-confidence and empowerment.
Upon visiting her social media pages, newcomers quickly learn that Agutu embodies authenticity. Describing herself as “very vibrant and vivacious,” she explained that her personality combines extroverted energy with introverted tendencies. “I want my platform to be a safe space for people to feel seen and celebrated,” she said, emphasising her commitment to fostering an environment where followers leave feeling better than when they arrived.
Agutu’s approach is rooted in honesty, acknowledging that “bad bitches have bad days too.” By sharing content that resonates with her own aspirations, she finds that her messages of encouragement often uplift others. “Sometimes when I create content, I do it for myself, and it happens to inspire other people,” she explained. The positive feedback from followers—spanning a demographic from young adults to mothers—validates her efforts and highlights the real impact her work has had on their lives.
Her family also plays a vital role in Agutu’s success. After relocating to the United States for her education, she earned a master’s degree in International Marketing & Business Analytics from Hult International Business School. Despite initial concerns from her parents about her content creation career, they eventually recognised her talent and commitment as she gained visibility through various platforms. “Once they’ve seen me in my element and do my speaking engagements, they said, ‘This is actually something that you’re really good at,’” she shared.
Beyond content creation, Agutu is a host on the Amazon Prime talk show, *INFLUENCED*, and is now in her fourth year collaborating with *Sports Illustrated Swimsuit*. Despite the glitz of her modelling career, she faced personal hurdles, including falling ill just before a major shoot. Drawing on her experience as a confidence coach, she found strength through her community. “I called my parents and cried for a while, and I was afraid I wasn’t able to show up as the best version of myself,” she admitted.
However, with an unwavering belief in her abilities, Agutu engaged in self-motivation that reignited her confidence. “I was telling myself, ‘Girl, you are doing big things. Hard things happen, but you can still push through,’” she recounted. Surrounded by a supportive tribe, including friends and family, she walked into the shoot ready to conquer the day.
Nevertheless, Agutu recognises the importance of balancing authenticity with privacy on social media. “I show people that I’m real, but I don’t fully post my worst days,” she explained. Understanding that vulnerability can open doors to judgement, she opts to share selective experiences while managing her mental health through positive outlets like walks or dinners. “I can have a bad moment, but it will not dictate the way I continue to live or the way I continue to show up,” she affirmed.
Achieng Agutu continues to inspire countless women, proving that self-love and authenticity can pave the way for meaningful connections and representation in an industry that often overlooks diversity. Her journey encourages individuals to embrace their true selves while striving for growth, all the while uplifting those around them. As she captures audiences with her vibrant personality and positive messages, Agutu is undoubtedly setting the stage for a new wave of representation and empowerment in the media landscape.
