A five-year-old boy from Minnesota is currently fighting for his life following a heroic act on Easter Sunday, which saw him save his younger brother from drowning in icy waters. Ashkan Thibodeaux has faced significant medical challenges since the incident but has displayed signs of improvement as he continues his recovery.

On 5 April, while exploring near a creek in Itasca County, Ashkan’s younger brother, Wyatt, fell into the frigid water. Without hesitation, Ashkan jumped in to save him, successfully guiding Wyatt to safety. This courageous act, however, came at a high cost for Ashkan, who suffered severe brain damage and required immediate hospitalisation.
Following his rescue, emergency personnel, including firefighters and deputies from the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, performed CPR on Ashkan for six hours during transport to a children’s hospital in Minneapolis. Tragically, his condition was critical, and medical staff quickly placed him on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a life-support system used in severe heart and lung conditions.
Ashkan’s family has been keeping friends and supporters updated on his progress via the CaringBridge platform, detailing the numerous surgeries he has undergone. His first major operation involved the removal of his appendix along with parts of both his colon and small intestine. While this news has been difficult for the family to digest, they remain hopeful, informed by doctors that a full recovery is still possible.
Notably, Ashkan’s family reported that he does not have extensive brain damage, though there are “specks of damage in various areas.” In the first week following the incident, they were encouraged by signs of life in their son; Ashkan began moving his legs and toes, responding to simple questions with head nods, and even showed expressions of frustration when his favourite television programme was interrupted.
Despite the positive developments, the emotional toll of watching their son struggle has been profound. Ashkan’s family expressed their heartache over witnessing their once-vibrant child, known for his chatter and enthusiasm, now rendered largely silent due to breathing tubes. “It is heartbreaking as parents,” they stated, describing how their son has always been the kind to fill a room with his presence.
Fortunately, signs of progress have continued. On 17 April, Ashkan’s breathing tube was removed, enabling him to vocalise simple answers and express his needs verbally. While his journey remains daunting, these milestones have provided glimmers of hope amidst the uncertainty of his condition.
The community has rallied around the family, with a GoFundMe campaign established to help cover medical expenses. As of the latest updates, the campaign has raised nearly £35,000 (approximately $43,900), edging closer to its target of $45,000, underscoring the outpouring of support for Ashkan and his family during this trying time.
As of now, Ashkan has made notable strides in his recovery. Reports indicate he has moved from his hospital bed to a chair, clutching a stuffed toy as he navigates the complexities of his healing journey. His family shared a heartwarming moment, noting, “Today Ashkan stole my chair. God has been working, and we will continue to watch him work today.”
As Ashkan continues to show resilience and strength, his family remains steadfast in their hope for his recovery, bolstered by the support of their community and the small victories that punctuate their days in the hospital.
