A tragic helicopter crash off the coast of Kauaʻi, Hawaii, has claimed the lives of three individuals, including a husband and wife from Massachusetts. The incident occurred on March 26, when an Airborne Aviation tourist helicopter went down near Kalalau Beach, shortly after taking off with four passengers on board.

Among the deceased are Patrick Haskell, aged 59, and his wife, Margaret Rimmler, aged 65, both known for their commitment to community-oriented ventures through their family-operated business, Haskell Insurance Agency. They had recently retired, eager to embrace a new chapter in their lives. Also confirmed dead in the crash is Oksana Pihol, a 40-year-old national from Ukraine.
The lone pilot of the helicopter, whose identity has not been released, managed to survive the crash, along with one other passenger. Both were immediately taken to Wilcox Medical Centre in Lihue for medical evaluation and treatment post-incident.
In a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the pilot recounted the disconcerting moments leading up to the crash. After executing a left turn away from the shoreline—standard practice for his flight path—the helicopter began to vibrate more intensely. The report noted, “The pilot experienced a high frequency vibration throughout the helicopter that came in waves and became stronger.”
Chaos ensued when the helicopter then entered an un-commanded right yaw, which could not be rectified by the pilot’s inputs. As the aircraft began spinning uncontrollably, the pilot attempted to regain control by entering into autorotation, a manoeuvre that allows helicopters to safely descend in the event of an engine failure.
However, despite the pilot’s efforts to regain control and increase airspeed, a distress call was sent before the helicopter crashed into the sea. The aircraft hit the water approximately 300 feet offshore, rolling onto its side and eventually becoming partially submerged shortly after impact.
Witnesses described seeing the helicopter as intact prior to the crash, with one stating it “appeared to be intact before it impacted the water and broke up.” The NTSB report indicated that the fuselage and main rotor blades of the helicopter sustained significant damage, but the official cause of the crash has yet to be determined as investigations are ongoing.
The surviving passenger reported noticing a change in the helicopter’s engine noise before the helicopter veered towards the water, which added to the foreboding atmosphere in the moments preceding the crash.

Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami addressed the media shortly after the incident, offering heartfelt sympathies during a press conference held on March 28, emphasizing the need for support in such times of sorrow.
