In a heartfelt display of community spirit, residents of Grant County, Kentucky, gathered to support nine-year-old Maddie Humbert, who is battling brain cancer. The event, aptly named “Pack the Park for Maddie,” was organised to alleviate the financial burden associated with her ongoing treatment.

Maddie’s journey with cancer began in November 2025 when she was diagnosed with the disease. Since then, she has endured two significant brain surgeries and is undergoing chemotherapy. Despite these challenges, the young girl remains an integral part of her local little league community, where she has played baseball since childhood. However, due to her health issues, she has been unable to participate in her team’s activities during the current season.
In a show of solidarity, hundreds of community members came together at the little league baseball field for the upcoming season’s opening day. Chris Jump, a member of the Grant County Little League, expressed the overwhelming desire to support Maddie, stating, “Maddie’s one of our own in little league. We want to take care of our own.” Jump not only aimed for the event to be an uplifting experience for Maddie but also hoped to give the younger kids their first taste of the sport in a vibrant, supportive setting.
The event featured various activities, with Maddie herself throwing the ceremonial first pitch. The baseball field was adorned with orange ribbons, symbolising her courage and strength throughout her treatment. Donations collected during the day, alongside raffle proceeds, were intended to fund Maddie’s recovery and assist her family with associated medical costs.
Jump highlighted the ongoing nature of Maddie’s medical expenses, noting, “There’s still going to be outstanding costs, so we want to be there and we’ll keep collecting and helping provide for them as long as we can or as long as they need it.”
Maddie’s mother, Stanley Humbert, expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support from their local community. “We’re very thankful for the day and everyone that showed up,” she shared. “The faces we’ve seen. We’re not alone, and we can reach out to many people and didn’t realise until now how close this community is.” Her sentiments reflect a broader truth about the strength derived from unity and shared support in times of crisis.
The emotional support has also extended beyond financial aid, as evidenced by the words of Maddie’s grandmother, Donna Humbert.
