A recent study indicates that lobsters may be capable of experiencing pain similar to humans, prompting discussions around their ethical treatment in both the food and scientific industries. Research conducted at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden revealed that administering common painkillers such as aspirin and lidocaine significantly decreased the escape responses of Norway lobsters when subjected to electric shocks.

Published in the journal Scientific Reports, the study suggests that these widely used analgesics can effectively mute the pain responses of these crustaceans. Lead author Eleftherios Kasiouras, a PhD student at the university, stated that the reactions observed during the electric shock tests point to a more complex experience than mere reflex actions. “Responding to painkillers during potentially painful procedures means that what they experience is more than just simple reflexes,” he asserted.

Professor Lynne Sneddon, another of the study’s co-authors, emphasised the implications of the findings. “The fact that painkillers developed for humans also work on Norway lobsters shows how similar we function. This highlights the importance of treating crustaceans with the same consideration we extend towards other animals, such as chickens and cows,” she explained. Sneddon also urged for greater attention to the welfare of these creatures in various sectors, pointing out ongoing campaigns advocating for their inclusion in animal welfare legislation.

In the conducted experiments, the researchers injected some lobsters with aspirin, while others were placed in water with dissolved lidocaine. A control group received no pain relief prior to being subjected to a 10-second electric shock. While all lobsters displayed tail-flipping behaviour—an escape response—the lobsters treated with painkillers exhibited a markedly reduced reaction compared to the unmedicated group. The researchers interpreted this as evidence that the electric shocks were eliciting not only muscular contractions but genuine pain responses.
The findings call for a reassessment of practices in the food industry, particularly concerning the method of killing lobsters for consumption. Sneddon urged for further studies to identify the most humane methods for treating and preparing crustaceans if their consumption is to continue in the future.
