Eugene Lim, a prominent figure in the running community and beloved influencer, passed away at the age of 45, just three days after marrying his long-time partner, Sofie Chandra. Lim’s battle with stage 4 bladder cancer began in early 2024, culminating in a deeply emotional ceremony held at his hospital bedside.

Sofie Chandra, who shared both a personal and professional journey with Lim, announced his death on April 10. In her heartfelt Instagram tribute, she expressed her enduring love, stating, “Eug has passed on, a true legend, the love of my life. His light will keep shining on and on.”
Lim’s connection to running began with an ordinary challenge in 2020 as he attempted to complete a marathon distance in the garage of his apartment. During this exercise, he noted an alarming change in the colour of his urine, leading him to seek medical advice. A battery of diagnostic tests failed to reveal any concerns at that time, yet the discolouration persisted intermittently, primarily following physical exertion.
In 2022, two years after his initial symptoms, Lim advocated for further testing, yet again, no issues were identified. However, the situation took a serious turn in June 2024, during a demanding 50-kilometre charity run from Thailand to Singapore. Following this event, he experienced dark red urine, prompting swift medical intervention. “My CT scan review was pushed up by a day, so I knew it was serious,” Lim recalled. Although he had always been in good health, he had mentally prepared himself for a possible serious illness.
The diagnosis confirmed that Lim had developed stage 4 urothelial bladder cancer, which had metastasised to both his lungs and neck. Despite the severity of his condition, Lim approached his diagnosis with a sense of calm. “Cancer has made me more alive. It’s made me appreciate life more,” he reflected, highlighting how facing mortality had changed his perspective. Committed to living fully, Lim continued his rigorous training regime and remained active within the running community.
Social media became a platform for Lim and Chandra to share their experiences, including a poignant moment in January 2026 when Lim proposed to Sofie during a time of significant health challenges. He chose an Alexandrite stone, representative of his birth month, for the engagement ring, creating a lasting symbol of their connection. In her emotional response, Chandra noted, “He wanted me to have a piece of him to always carry with me.” This moment exemplified their deep bond amidst adversity.
Even as Lim’s health declined, he demonstrated a remarkable resilience, insisting on remaining active through slow runs and walks. He articulated his philosophy on social media, expressing the importance of perseverance in the face of challenges. “When people ask, ‘Why do you still insist on trying to run?’ I do it for a few reasons,” he wrote, emphasising the inspiration he sought to convey to others battling their own adversities.
Chandra’s sentiments reflected the power of their connection. Describing Lim as “my constant. My strength. My pillar,” she honoured their commitment by proclaiming her happiness to become his wife, adding, “Will love you many, many times over and marry you again and again.” Their love story, marked by unwavering support and mutual respect, resonated with many and inspired countless individuals within their shared community.
Lim’s passing serves as a poignant reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the ability to find joy even in life’s most difficult moments. In the midst of his struggle, Eugene Lim not only highlighted the importance of living intentionally, but also forged an inspiring legacy that will continue to motivate others.
As the running community mourns the loss of Eugene Lim, his story remains a testament to courage, love, and resilience. His legacy will persist in the hearts and minds of those he inspired; his journey epitomises what it means to run towards life, even in the face of life’s greatest challenges.
