A couple from Columbus, Ohio, found themselves at the centre of an unexpected journey when their highly anticipated cruise to Bermuda was rerouted to Canada due to adverse weather conditions. India Jade McCue, 29, and her husband Ian McCue, 33, were gearing up for a sunny getaway when they received an email alerting them just days before departure that their destination had changed from Bermuda’s warm shores to the cooler climes of eastern Canada.

The McCues initially struggled to process the news, mistaking it for an April Fool’s prank since the email arrived on Good Friday. “We were absolutely shocked,” the couple recalled. As reality set in, so did their disappointment, particularly since half of their travel group, including Ian’s parents, had already arrived at the departure city. “With it being so close to the actual ship departure… it was too late to cancel flights, hotels, and all the other logistics,” they explained.

The cruise, operated by Virgin Voyages, took place as scheduled from April 6 to April 11, albeit on a new itinerary that replaced sun-soaked beaches with cooler Canadian weather. Virgin Voyages communicated the change was necessary to ensure passenger and crew safety, citing unsatisfactory conditions that could have made the original route dangerous.
In a statement, a Virgin Voyages spokesperson expressed regret for the change but emphasised safety as the primary concern. “Valiant Lady was slated to sail from New York City to Bermuda, but after closely monitoring forecast conditions, we determined that continuing to Bermuda would have presented genuinely unsafe conditions for our Sailors and Crew,” they explained. The spokesperson also acknowledged that Saint John, New Brunswick, was not the tropical destination many passengers had in mind.
To make amends, Virgin Voyages provided passengers with onboard credit, as well as future cruise incentives for those who opted to stay despite the altered plans. They were offered further compensation, including a Future Voyage Credit and increased onboard spending credits, to help compensate for their disrupted holiday.
Despite the initial setback, the McCues made the best of their unexpected trip and embraced the charm of their new surroundings. Upon returning home, they took to TikTok to share their story, capturing the attention of a wide audience. Their video, which humourously recounted the dramatic change of plans, resonated with many, leading it to go viral.
“We thought it’d be funny to share our story online because it truly is such a wild change of plans,” India explained. The clip elicited a mix of shock and amusement from viewers, but the couple took the opportunity to reflect positively on their experiences in Canada. They praised the Canadians they met, acknowledging their kindness and hospitality during a challenging situation.
During their stop in Saint John, the McCues were touched by the warmth of the local community. “We met some of the kindest people who felt so badly for our situation and offered a Canadian hospitality that we really appreciated,” Ian said. The family spent quality time together on the cruise, playing cards, enjoying meals, and participating in entertainment, helping to create fond memories despite the weather.
While they missed the Bermuda beaches they had initially envisioned, the McCues expressed understanding towards Virgin Voyages’ decision to prioritise safety. “As much as it was a disappointment… we understand Virgin Voyages’ choice to keep all passengers safe during a trip at sea,” they reflected.
Now, the couple hopes to inspire others through their experience—highlighting the importance of adaptability and the potential for joy in unexpected situations. “Our hope is that this story will inspire people to always try to make the most out of an unexpected situation,” Ian noted, “to look for opportunities to travel with their loved ones and create joy in everyday moments… even if they’re colder than expected.”
The McCues’ adventure serves as a reminder that even amidst potential disappointment, there are always opportunities for connection, warmth, and pleasant surprises waiting to be discovered.
