The Orange County Sheriff’s Office received the missing person report early on that Wednesday morning, around 8:54 am local time. Lewis was last seen the previous day, and his family went to Barnett Park, a popular fishing location, when he did not return home.

In response to the report, deputies initiated a thorough search, utilising their Marine and Dive units to assist in the effort. Search teams conducted searches on the ground, in the water, and from the air, as they aimed to locate Lewis. Family members waited anxiously at the park, hoping for positive news about his whereabouts.

One family member noted that Lewis frequently fished at Barnett Park. This familiarity with the area made his disappearance even more concerning for the family, as they felt that he knew the waters well. Tragically, after several hours of searching, the dive team located Lewis’ body in the vicinity.
An autopsy is scheduled to take place by the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office to ascertain the cause of death. This will provide crucial information, both for the family and for authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding Lewis’s passing.
Family and friends have painted a picture of Lewis as a dedicated outdoorsman who loved fishing and enjoyed sharing outdoor experiences with others. A relative described him as a gentle soul, highlighting his caring nature and passion for the sport he cherished.
While reports indicate that an empty kayak and an orange life vest were discovered near the Barnett Park boat ramp, officials have yet to confirm whether these items are associated with Lewis. The lack of information regarding these findings adds to the uncertainty surrounding the circumstances leading to his tragic death.
As the community mourns the loss of a beloved local figure, the investigation continues. The family is left grappling with their grief, while awaiting answers that an autopsy may provide. The Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office has not responded to inquiries for further information at this time.
In the wake of this incident, it serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with water-based activities, especially for those venturing out alone. Local authorities stress the importance of safety precautions, such as wearing life vests when on the water, and ensuring that someone is aware of one’s plans and timeline for returning.
As the search and subsequent recovery unite the community in mourning, Lewis’s legacy as a passionate angler and a loving individual will likely endure in the memories of those who knew him.
