Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in recovery mode following recent surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sustained during a critical game against the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14, 2025. Just a day after the injury, Mahomes underwent the operation, which has since brought him into the public eye with his progress.

The first images following the surgery were shared by Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, who posted heartwarming photos featuring the family enjoying time together on a farm in Texas. These snapshots, taken during the offseason, reveal Mahomes’ scars for the first time, offering a glimpse into his recovery journey. In one photograph, the 30-year-old quarterback is seen paddle boarding with his youngest daughter, Golden Raye, where the scar on his left leg is prominently displayed.

Another image captures Mahomes holding his eldest daughter, Sterling, while she interacts with one of the farm’s goats. The length of the scar, noticeable from just below his knee to the upper part of his calf, serves as a reminder of the injury that caused a significant disruption to the Chiefs’ season.

In addition to the tender moments caught in candid family pictures, Mahomes also shared the delights of family life, including a recent tropical holiday taken with his family to unwind before he returned to training. The vacation appears to have been a well-deserved break for the family of five, which also includes Mahomes’ son, Bronze, aged three.
Back to work after their getaway, Mahomes showcased a glimpse of his rehab progress by posting a video of himself practising football for the first time since the injury. Despite wearing a brace on his left leg, he expressed his enthusiasm for getting back into the game with a cheerful message that read, “Day by day! Great being able to throw the ball around today!”
The loss against the Chargers, which ended in a nail-biting 19-17 defeat, was a blow for the Chiefs, marking the first time since 2014 that they failed to secure a ticket to the postseason. Following the setback, Mahomes opened up about the injury and his aspirations for recovery. He indicated that he has been diligently following the rehabilitation plan set out by his medical team and emphasised that while he is eager to exceed his goals, he is also mindful of the need to avoid setbacks.
“I just try to maximise those [goals] — they hold me back, because I always want to go a little bit further,” he explained. Mahomes is aiming to be prepared for the beginning of the 2026 NFL season. While the timeline for his full recovery remains uncertain, he expressed hope that the medical team has given him a green light to compete starting in Week 1.
Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid spoke at the NFL’s annual meetings about Mahomes’ recovery, suggesting that each player’s healing process is unique. Reid, known for his faith in Mahomes, stated, “I would never bet against him. He’s going to put in the time and effort and always push it, but within reason, so he doesn’t take steps back.” The coach indicated that feedback from Mahomes’ rehabilitation progress has been positive thus far.
As the countdown to the new season unfolds, anticipation surrounding the return of Mahomes remains high among fans, teammates, and the NFL community alike. His determination and commitment to recovery exemplify the resilience often seen in elite athletes, leaving many optimistic about his prospects for a swift return to form on the field.
