At approximately 3:40 p.m. local time, emergency services responded to reports of a tunnel collapse near Knights Ferry in Calaveras County. According to the Modesto Fire Department, the incident left one individual trapped within the tunnel, while another person managed to escape and was subsequently transported to a medical facility. This individual sustained injuries described as “minor to moderate” by the South San Joaquin Irrigation District (SSJID) and Oakdale Irrigation District (OID) in a joint statement.

Cappurro was a team member for the Provost and Pritchard Consulting Group, working as an advisor on the project. Despite the best efforts of emergency responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was recovered later that evening, around 10 p.m., amidst extensive rescue operations involving over 30 firefighters, multiple fire engines, and rescue units.
In their statement, SSJID and OID expressed their heartfelt condolences to Cappurro’s family, friends, and colleagues. “We extend our deepest sympathies during this tragic time,” they stated, acknowledging the impact of Cappurro’s loss on her loved ones and the team involved in the project. The districts thanked the first responders from various jurisdictions for their coordinated response in both rescue and recovery efforts, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the emergency services.
Additionally, the construction team, who were engaged in rescue operations alongside first responders, were also remembered in the condolences. The districts assured the public that they would cooperate fully with all relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident and provide updates as further information becomes available.
The Canyon Tunnel Project is a collaborative initiative between the SSJID and OID, aimed at improving water delivery and management systems in the region. The site is currently under investigation as authorities seek to understand the factors that led to the tunnel collapse.
In light of Cappurro’s untimely death, her family and friends have set up a GoFundMe page to support her loved ones during this difficult time. The crowdfunding effort has so far raised $30,000 towards a target of $55,000, reflecting the community’s support and solidarity in the wake of this tragedy.
Colleagues and community members continue to remember Cappurro not just as a dedicated professional but also as a devoted mother. As tributes pour in, many have taken to social media to share their memories and condolences, reiterating the profound impact her life had on those around her.
This unfortunate incident underscores the inherent risks associated with construction work, particularly in tunnelling projects where safety is paramount. The SSJID and OID emphasised their commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards and protecting all workers involved in such projects.
As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of a valued member who was dedicated to her profession and family, leaving behind two children who will now grow up without their mother.平县
