In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the family of a one-year-old boy has been told that he will be removed from life support after being declared brain dead. Alastor, who was initially sent home from the emergency room with a diagnosis of croup, has been in a coma for three months following a series of medical complications.
Maegan Coffin, Alastor’s mother, recounted that her son first exhibited signs of illness in January. On January 9, she took him to the emergency department, where he was diagnosed with the flu and croup. Following the appointment, the young toddler was prescribed antiviral medication and steroids. However, the family’s relief was short-lived, as Alastor’s condition deteriorated the following night.
Only a day later, Alastor experienced breathing difficulties that prompted the family to rush him back to the hospital. “After they did the X-ray, he stopped breathing,” Coffin explained in an interview. The situation escalated when initial efforts to intubate him failed, leading to his transfer to a second hospital. Eventually, he was airlifted to a third facility, which may have resulted in a extended period without oxygen.
Since that critical night, Alastor has remained in a coma, leaving his family to cope with a heart-breaking reality. His father, Eric Ryan, created a GoFundMe page to support the family during this challenging period. As they split their time between the hospital and caring for their other four children at home, Ryan desperately sought hope for his son’s recovery.
On April 12, Ryan took to Facebook to share the devastating news that Alastor had been declared brain dead. “Alastor failed his tests and was pronounced dead yesterday afternoon,” he wrote, conveying the profound sorrow experienced by their family. He emphasised the innocence of his young son, stating, “He was a healthy baby… so happy and he became the centre of our family.”
The emotional strain on the family has been immense, especially witnessing their children’s grief. Ryan expressed how the collective despair among his children “destroyed a part of me.” They were left grappling with the implications of losing a beloved sibling, a wound that will likely take time to heal.
Despite the impending removal of life support, the family has chosen to preserve Alastor’s bodily memories for posterity. Ryan noted that Alastor would remain on life support until April 17 to allow time for arrangements, including taking moulds of his hands and feet. This bittersweet process seems to offer a semblance of comfort amid overwhelming sorrow.
In light of the traumatic experience, the family indicated they are exploring potential legal options related to Alastor’s care and the decisions made in the emergency room.
