Luke Gulbranson, best known for his appearances on reality television shows such as *Summer House* and its spin-off *Winter House*, has officially declared his candidacy for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. The 42-year-old Minnesota native aims to challenge the Republican incumbent, Rep. Pete Stauber, in the state’s 8th Congressional District.

Gulbranson’s announcement comes as the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party prepares for its endorsement convention, an event that is pivotal in determining candidate support for the upcoming election. Despite entering the race shortly before this important milestone, he remains adamant about continuing his campaign, regardless of the outcome at the convention. “We’re going to put our best foot forward, and we will work our tails off to win the primary, go into the general against Pete Stauber, and beat him as well,” Gulbranson told *The Minnesota Star Tribune*.

The former reality star released his first campaign advertisement, which offers a personal insight into his background and motivations for running. In the ad, he introduces himself as a “hockey coach, businessman and actor,” and notes the stark contrast between the drama of reality television and the pressing matters in Washington. “Yeah, I’ve been on reality TV, but that’s drama for show,” he states. “What’s happening in D.C. is real drama, with real consequences, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.”
Originating from Eveleth, Minnesota, Gulbranson outlines his personal experiences that inform his political ambitions. He recalls growing up with limited means, sharing anecdotes about having utilities turned off and needing food assistance. “I know what it’s like to get the power turned off — a few times. To need food assistance or go hungry,” he reveals in the ad. He attributes his perseverance to the support and lessons learned from his community, emphasising the importance of union jobs in rural areas.
Additionally, Gulbranson’s campaign intends to criticise Stauber’s endorsement of former President Donald Trump’s tax policies, which he argues have endangered healthcare access in rural Minnesota. “If you’re going to cut funding for these facilities that need to keep their doors open, that becomes a problem,” Gulbranson stated. He highlights that rural communities already face challenges in accessing healthcare and that reducing funding could exacerbate existing issues.
In his campaign materials, he further identifies his stance against “dangerous rhetoric” and policies stemming from the Trump administration, such as increased ICE presence in communities and detrimental healthcare legislation. Gulbranson expresses a desire for a shift in focus away from military spending and towards domestic issues affecting local families.
Gulbranson does not seem overly concerned about how his reality television past may influence voters. Rather, he positions himself as an embodiment of the struggles faced by ordinary people in northern Minnesota. “I’m relatable to the people in northern Minnesota. I’m a small-town kid. I know the hardships, I know what they’re going through,” he asserts confidently.
He hopes to capitalise on the Democratic momentum in Minnesota, especially looking towards the influence of prominent figures like Senator Amy Klobuchar, who is a favoured candidate in the upcoming gubernatorial race. Gulbranson believes that a strong performance by the Democratic party in the state could translate into enhanced support for down-ballot candidates such as himself.
As he embarks on his political journey, Gulbranson seeks to transition from the bright lights of reality television to the rigorous demands of public service. His campaign will likely focus on connecting with voters on shared values, community resilience, and a commitment to addressing the pressing challenges facing rural Minnesota.
Gulbranson’s entry into the political arena underscores a growing trend where individuals from non-traditional backgrounds are stepping forward to challenge established political norms. Whether his celebrity status can translate into electoral success remains to be seen, but the coming months will undoubtedly reveal his ability to engage with constituents and build a robust campaign strategy.
