A tragic incident in Arizona has resulted in the death of a tree trimmer following an accident involving a palm tree. The victim has been identified as 57-year-old Flavio Sesmas Maya. Emergency services were alerted to the scene on the morning of April 12, after a section of palm fronds, commonly referred to as a “palm skirt,” fell on him while he was working.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Mill Avenue and Apache Boulevard. According to the Tempe Police Department, first responders acted swiftly once they arrived. Fire crews were tasked with securing the scene, and a ladder unit was deployed to assist in removing the debris that had fallen on Maya. Once the area was cleared, members of the Technical Rescue Team (TRT) helped in safely lowering him down from the tree.
Despite these efforts, Maya was pronounced dead at the scene. Thankfully, there were no other reported injuries linked to this tragic event. Police have been working to gather further information as they continue their investigation into the accident.
Carter Allen, the owner of Tempe Tree Services, provided insight into the dangers associated with tree work. Although Allen did not employ Maya, he remarked that his own team had been working near the site of the incident just days prior. He noted that palm trees can pose significant hazards to workers. “Palm trees are very tall and slender, and when you climb to work on them, there are thousands of pounds worth of fronds that can come loose and descend,” he explained. “If you’re positioned incorrectly when that happens, it can result in severe consequences.”
Allen recommended that for trees with several years of growth, using a lift to access them from the ground is the safest approach. “This method reduces the risk of falling debris and allows workers to carry out their tasks more safely,” he added.
The Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health has confirmed it is investigating the circumstances surrounding Maya’s death and the associated safety protocols. However, as of yet, they have not provided additional details about the ongoing investigation.
