Originally from Sudan, Adam’s family had only moved to Utah two years prior after spending over a decade in a refugee camp. The Mayor of Kearns, Kelly Bush, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic accident.
According to reports from the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake, the incident took place on 4140 West in Kearns on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 27. Adam was in the crosswalk when a Chevrolet Tahoe struck him. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find Adam in critical condition, and he was rushed to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the SUV cooperated with the authorities during the investigation.
Family members revealed that Adam and his younger brother were on their way to Kearns Junior High School when the fatal accident occurred. While Adam tragically lost his life, his younger brother, who witnessed the incident, thankfully escaped physical harm. The cousin of Adam, Mohamat Mahadjir, expressed the family’s profound sadness at the devastating loss, especially for the younger brother who had to witness the tragedy.
Surveillance footage indicated that Adam did not stop at the crosswalk before the collision. UPD Kearns Precinct Chief Levi Hughes confirmed these details, noting that Adam pedalled directly into the path of the oncoming vehicle. Despite initial confusion about his age, the police later clarified that Adam was indeed 14 years old at the time of the accident.
The Mahamat family shared their harrowing journey from Sudan to Utah, seeking a better life and future for their children. Adam’s mother, now a single parent to eight children, expressed her fear and heartache at the thought of sending her children to school, unsure if they will return home safely. The family set up a GoFundMe page to cover the costs of Adam’s funeral services, describing him as an extraordinary individual who dreamt of helping others as a doctor.
