Sonal Keay, a businesswoman from the UK, has opened up about her challenging battle with a rare condition that leaves her severely allergic to sunlight. Diagnosed with chronic actinic dermatitis, Keay experiences intense pain from even minimal exposure to sunlight, making her daily life an intricate journey of precautions and management.
Speaking on ITV’s morning show ‘This Morning’, Keay revealed that her struggle began at the age of 18, following a holiday where she suffered a particularly severe reaction after being out in the sun. “It didn’t clear up at all when we got back,” Keay explained. “Every single time I was outside, I experienced significant pain and discomfort.” Initially, she thought certain clothing would alleviate her symptoms, but it took her two years of grappling with discomfort to connect her pain to sun exposure.

Chronic actinic dermatitis is a condition that affects a small percentage of the population. It can lead to eczematous lesions on areas of skin exposed to light, and, in Keay’s case, even non-exposed areas can become inflamed. “It’s not simply about very painful skin; it’s an experience so intense that I almost wish I could rip it off for some relief,” she expressed candidly.

Keay articulated the severity of her allergy, revealing that on overcast days, being outside for just a minute can trigger a severe allergic reaction. “When the sun has set completely, I’m safe,” she stated, highlighting the constant vigilance required to manage her condition. The physical pain, however, is just one aspect of her struggle. Keay shared that she faced profound psychological challenges as well, developing a fear of all forms of light, including artificial sources such as lamps.
Reflecting on her diagnosis, Keay described it as a turning point that plunged her into a “very dark period” of her life. “It required me to obsessively manage my own skin,” she said, indicating the lengths she must go to protect herself. This includes applying sunscreen before leaving home, a habit that has become second nature to her akin to picking up keys or putting on shoes.
In addition to strict skincare routines, Keay has made modifications to her home environment to shield herself from harmful UV rays. She has installed UV-proof film on her windows, permitting her to live as ordinarily as possible within the constraints of her condition. “Whilst I might appear normal on the outside, my life is far from normal,” she confided.
Keay’s experience shines a light on the struggles faced by those dealing with chronic health issues that may not be visible externally. As she continues to navigate her daily life with these challenges, her story is one of resilience and adaptation. It serves as a reminder of the complexity of chronic illnesses and the impact they can have not only on physical health but also on mental well-being.
In her discussion with the hosts of ‘This Morning’, Keay emphasised the importance of awareness regarding less common health conditions. Her hope is that by sharing her journey, she can encourage understanding and compassion towards others who may face similar invisible battles. It is through such openness that she aims to foster a supportive environment for those living with chronic illnesses.
As Keay faces her daily challenges, her determination and resilience inspire many. She represents a broader community of individuals navigating the unpredictable nature of life with health conditions that force them to constantly adapt and overcome.
