Father Confronts School Board Member Who Told Teen Student ‘God, You’re Hot’

A Tennessee father has openly challenged Washington County school board member Keith Ervin following remarks made about a female student during a public meeting. The incident occurred on April 2, when Ervin referred to the unidentified student as “hot” after she expressed her thoughts during a meeting. This incident has sparked widespread concern and led to an emergency board meeting on April 8 to address the comments.

During the initial meeting, the female student from David Crockett High School asked several pertinent questions. After her contribution, Ervin, addressing her directly, commented, “God, you’re hot, you know that? Where do you go to school at?” This remark has been described as inappropriate and has prompted outrage from the community.

In the wake of the comment, members of the school board convened an emergency meeting where they voted to censure Ervin. This is not the first time Ervin found himself in a controversial situation; he was previously censured in 2009 after making a sexual gesture during a classroom discussion, according to records obtained by local news affiliate WSMV.

At the emergency gathering, numerous community members expressed their dissatisfaction with Ervin’s behaviour. One father, whose impassioned remarks gained traction on social media, confronted Ervin directly during the meeting. Although initially informed that he could not formally pose a question, the father challenged the board members to reflect on their own feelings about Ervin’s comments. He asked them to raise their hands if they found the remarks offensive, but, notably, none of the board members did.

The father continued, pointing out the gravity of such comments, especially regarding the protection of children in schools. “We have to worry about our kids getting shot up in schools and all this other stuff, right? But what we don’t need to be worrying about is the comments of a man to a minor. Would you want your kid around that guy without a camera around? I wouldn’t,” he asserted, receiving applause from other attendees.

Expressing his frustration with the lack of accountability among school board members, the father declared that if Ervin retained his position, he would galvanise efforts to remove the entire board. He stated, “I’m going to do whatever I can to raise as much money as I can to get every single one of y’all out of here.” The crowd responded with enthusiasm, showing unanimous support for his stance.

Turning his attention to Ervin, the father told him, “Look at your face — you don’t even care. This is your community that you’re supposed to be serving. Look at the distraction. You put us on the map — nationally, embarrassed us.” He expressed disbelief that Ervin had not resigned in the aftermath of the incident, stating that such comments would have resulted in immediate consequences during his own youth.

In response to the backlash, Ervin defended his comments. During the emergency meeting, he clarified that he had not intended to make an inappropriate remark. According to Ervin, when he described the student as “hot,” he meant that she was “on a roll” with her questions and that the comment was not aimed at her appearance. “Obviously, I’ve seen the clip. Look, I get it, if that’s all you’re seeing, I understand why people are reacting the way they are. But that’s not the full conversation, not even close,” he said.

Ervin further explained, “When I mentioned she was hot, I meant she was on a roll. It had nothing to do with her appearance.” He alluded to the fact that the clip, which has circulated widely, offers an incomplete version of the two-hour meeting, thereby misrepresenting his intentions. He expressed regret that the incident overshadowed what he deemed a significant moment for the student, apologising for any distress caused.

However, the community remains divided, with many insisting that Ervin’s remarks were inappropriate and warranted serious consequences. The incident has sparked a broad discussion about the accountability of school officials and the standards they are held to when interacting with students, especially minors.
