As the second posthumous birthday of the late Shannen Doherty approaches on April 12, Brian Krause, known for his role as Leo in the iconic television series ‘Charmed’, has opened up about his memories of working alongside her. Doherty, who gained fame from her earlier role in ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’, was central to the show’s success during its three-season run featuring her, Alyssa Milano, and Holly Marie Combs.

Krause shared his thoughts on how Doherty’s involvement brought a significant level of credibility to the series. He recalled first learning about her joining the cast, saying it gave him strong confidence in the show’s potential. “Anything Shannen was going to do was probably going to be good,” he remarked, indicating that her previous successes made her an invaluable asset to the show.
His journey to landing the role of Leo was not straightforward. Despite auditioning for multiple roles prior to ‘Charmed’, Krause initially faced rejection. When he finally read for the part of Leo, however, he approached the audition with surprising anger, reflecting his frustrations with the entertainment industry at the time. “I just read it really angry, something I hadn’t done all day,” he recalled, explaining how this unexpected expression of emotion ultimately led to his casting.
As ‘Charmed’ evolved, Doherty’s character was written out at the end of the third season in 2001 and replaced by Rose McGowan. Krause has candidly expressed that watching this transition, especially given Doherty’s passing from breast cancer in 2024, is an emotional experience. “It’s been difficult to watch [the replacement of Doherty] due to how close Holly and her were,” he said, highlighting the profound impact of her loss not only within the show but also in the lives of those who knew her.
Doherty passed away at the age of 53, leaving behind a legacy of love and gratitude among fans and colleagues alike. Krause emphasized how dearly she is missed, stating, “Shannen was beloved, for sure, and she was such a force.” The show’s impact continues to resonate years after its finale in May 2006.
Today, Krause, Combs, and Drew Fuller co-host a podcast titled ‘House of Halliwell’, where they explore their experiences on ‘Charmed’ and honour its lasting legacy, including Doherty’s contributions. Their podcast has become a platform for reminiscing about their time on the show and the cherished memories that remain. Krause acknowledged the importance of this connection, saying, “We’ve just tried to be there for her and the fans have.”
Krause’s sentiments about engaging with fans have evolved over the years as he and his co-stars participate in conventions around the globe. Once sceptical of these gatherings, he has come to appreciate their significance. Reflecting on advice from his mother, he stated, “Your fans are everything. If someone writes you a letter, you write back. Without them, there’s nothing.”
Notably, he admired Doherty’s dedication to connecting with fans at these events. “That was the one thing I saw with Shannen in the last few years and how engaged she was with the fans,” he said, recognising her approach and dedication as an example for others to follow. Krause’s attitude aligns closely with Combs’ sentiments, who recently shared that Doherty had aspirations for the cast to host a ‘Charmed’ convention someday.
Combs reflected on the unrealised ambitions the group had during their time on the show, suggesting that they may have been more active in setting up events had Doherty been present. “She just had copious amounts of inspiration around her all the time,” Combs recalled, reminiscing on the vibrant ideas Doherty regularly brought forth.
With the legacy of ‘Charmed’ still alive through the memories of its cast and the affection of its audience, Krause seeks not only to honour Doherty but also to continue sharing the magic of their shared experiences. As the anniversary of her birthday nears, the bond forged between them during their time on screen remains a testament to her influence and the strength of their camaraderie.
