In a poignant encounter that underscores the complexities of grief and the unexpected connections it can foster, Shantasia Stanley found solace through a simple text message to her late grandmother’s mobile phone. Sharing her experience with the public, Stanley highlights the emotional waves often associated with loss and the profound impact of compassion, even from strangers.

Shantasia, a 27-year-old from Georgia, has always shared a deep bond with her grandmother, Lucille, whom she affectionately referred to as her “twin.” Their relationship was a cornerstone of her life, characterised by unconditional love and support. However, after Lucille’s health began to decline, Shantasia spent her final days at her bedside, providing comfort during a challenging period.

Tragically, Lucille passed away on May 18, 2024, while Stanley was attending a family funeral. Her absence at her grandmother’s funeral only amplified the weight of her grief. “I had to miss my grandmother’s funeral while taking care of another sick family member, which made my journey through grief even harder,” she explained. In January 2026, upon receiving Lucille’s obituary, she made a point to display it on her refrigerator, hoping it would bring some closure.
After walking by the obituary frequently and still engulfed in sorrow, Shantasia’s yearning to connect with her grandmother led her to send a text on April 2, 2026. The message read, “Miss You 😢,” reflecting her deep sense of loss. To her astonishment, the following day brought an unexpected reply. “I had almost forgotten that I had sent the message,” she shared, recounting the moment her heart dropped seeing a response from “Grandma!!👯” after nearly two years.
However, the reply was not what she anticipated. The recipient, initially furious, questioned who was messaging. Stanley’s immediate concern was that she might have accidentally texted a stranger involved in a romantic relationship. But after explaining the situation, she discovered she was communicating with a young girl who had recently taken over the phone number.
What began as a potentially troubling exchange quickly turned emotional. The girl, showing empathy, sent Stanley her condolences and shared supportive graphic images, reminiscent of the messages her grandmother once sent. “It shattered me to know her phone number had already been reassigned. But then, this little girl displayed compassion in a way only a child could,” Stanley expressed, reflecting on the unexpected comfort she received from someone she did not know.
In a touching gesture, the young girl even sent a video of herself singing “Girl in Green” by Maddox Batson, a song that struck a chord with Stanley. “My grandmother loved a green dress that she wore, which appeared in her obituary. The choice of song felt deeply symbolic,” she noted, asserting that it brought her a sense of joy amidst her mourning.
Despite the uplifting exchange, Stanley recognised the need to maintain boundaries, particularly as a mother herself. “I made it clear that while I appreciated the gesture, I couldn’t continue the conversation,” she explained. Concluding the interaction with gratitude, she urged the girl to inform her parents about the encounter, acknowledging the care instilled in her.
Eager to share this extraordinary experience, Stanley uploaded a video documenting the exchange on TikTok. The video resonated deeply with viewers, garnering over 2.7 million views as people connected with her story. “The response has been overwhelmingly beautiful,” she said, feeling as if her grandmother facilitated this surge of love from strangers.
Stanley’s narrative serves as a reminder of the importance of kindness in unfamiliar situations. “When someone reaches out, try being compassionate before reacting negatively. Deceased loved ones’ numbers are often reassigned, and you never know what someone might be going through,” she advised. Through her remarkable story of connection, she conveys a powerful message: a simple act of empathy can bridge not only distance between individuals but also span the emotional void left by loss.
