Boy, 7, Was Allegedly Locked in a Van by Father ‘to Protect Him.’ Over a Year Later, the Child Is Malnourished and Unable to Walk

A nine-year-old boy has been rescued from harrowing conditions after reportedly being confined to his father’s utility van for over a year. Authorities intervened on Monday, April 6, following a tip-off from a neighbour in Hagenbach, a village near the borders of Switzerland and Germany, who noted sounds emanating from the parked vehicle.

Upon arriving at the scene, police were shocked to find the child “lying in a fetal position, naked,” and covered only by a blanket atop a pile of refuse and excrement, according to Prosecutor Nicolas Heitz.
