Utkarsh Ambudkar, known for his role as Jay in the popular series “Ghosts,” recently ventured into directing with the episode titled “Michael Jackson Goes to HR,” which aired on 9 April 2025. Ambudkar’s directorial debut presented a unique challenge, as he found himself in front of the camera as much as behind it. “The most challenging aspect of this episode was how extensively Jay was featured,” he explained. With approximately 80 to 85 per cent of the script focused on his character, Ambudkar had to rely heavily on his support team, including his assistant director and director of photography, to help navigate the filming process.
Reflecting on his dual role, he candidly admitted that he faced difficulties early on. On the first day of shooting, overwhelmed by the responsibilities of directing, he momentarily forgot his lines. “I was fully in director mode and suddenly realised I had not memorised my lines,” he said, recalling the moment with a mix of embarrassment and humour. “What have I done? I only prepared half of my two jobs.” This experience served as a swift reminder of the demands of juggling both roles.
Support from the cast and crew was instrumental during this demanding period. Ambudkar’s on-screen wife, Rose McIver, who had previously directed an episode in Season 4, offered him invaluable advice. Her suggestion to treat the cast and crew with daily snacks sent Ambudkar on a mission to bring doughnuts for everyone. “I love treats, so it felt right to share,” he expressed. “It was a nice way to show gratitude for the support and patience during this process.”
The episode itself became pivotal for various characters, with Jay’s story arc involving an IRS audit after his efforts to shield Trevor, played by Asher Grodman, from potential trouble at work. Significant emotional exchanges unfolded, particularly between Jay and Sam, as they addressed their mutual concerns regarding the success of their business partnership. Additional layers of complexity arose in the relationships of other characters, including Pete and Alberta, who confronted feelings of jealousy.
In typical “Ghosts” fashion, the episode balanced humorous elements alongside its more serious undertones. One standout moment featured Jay attempting to distract HR through a Moonwalking routine. Ambudkar revealed that this scene was initially much more elaborate, with plans for a stunt involving him crashing through a plate of glass. “I had this vision of a big VFX stunt,” he recounted. “They allowed me to attempt it, but it ultimately didn’t make it into the final cut.” Such creative decisions underscored his passion for the project, as he delightedly noted that the crew enjoyed watching the rehearsals.
In a bid to maintain the comedic essence of his character, Ambudkar had to adjust his Moonwalking skills, deliberately downplaying his proficiency. “I wanted to execute it perfectly, but Jay isn’t really up to that standard,” he explained, highlighting the fun challenge of embodying a character who isn’t quite as skilled as he is.
April has proven to be a significant month for Ambudkar, not only due to his directorial debut but also because he released an animated album titled “Spaceman: A Love Story” earlier in the month. This ambitious project, accompanied by a musical short film, delves deeply into themes of love, family, culture, and personal identity.
The album evolved from an initial idea to animate a single song during the pandemic, ultimately transforming into a full-length project. Collaborating with animator Alex Salsberg, Ambudkar describes the narrative as a love story between an alien and an earthly girl. “It addresses various topics, including love, addiction, and the immigrant experience,” he noted, expressing pride in the work he has put into the album.
As “Ghosts” continues to entertain audiences, Ambudkar’s dual achievements as a director and musician showcase his multi-faceted talents. With new episodes airing every Thursday at 8:30 PM EST on CBS, viewers can look forward to more of Jay’s adventures and the compelling dynamics between the characters.
