Frankie Muniz has recounted a humorous encounter he had with Bryan Cranston during the early days of filming *Malcolm in the Middle*, a sitcom that became iconic in the 2000s. The 40-year-old actor shared his memories in a recent interview with PEOPLE, revealing that his first impression of Cranston was decidedly unforgettable.

As Muniz recalls, stepping into the role of Malcolm was a dream come true. Though only 13 at the time of auditioning for the role, he was filled with excitement and nervous energy as he walked onto set. Meeting the cast, particularly Cranston who played his father Hal, added to the thrill of beginning what would become a defining part of his career.

“The first day of filming was quite an experience,” Muniz reflected. “Bryan was the last person to be cast, and I think it was even on the morning of our first shoot that they finalised that he would be part of the project.” This fortuitous casting revealed itself during a particularly memorable first scene.

The pilot episode featured a comedic moment in which Cranston appears wearing what Muniz described as “a skin-colored Speedo,” leading to an awkward introduction. “He just came in and said, ‘Hey, boys, I’m going to be your dad,’” Muniz chuckled. While the moment was initially uncomfortable, it quickly became a cherished memory for both actors.

Cranston’s character, Hal, was initially intended for a minor role, but his portrayal brought an unexpected depth that transformed him into a fan-favourite. Muniz noted, “Hal originally was supposed to be such a small character… but Bryan is such an incredible actor and made the show, I think.” The dynamic between Muniz and Cranston would go on to define the heart of the series.

We would sneakily pin clothespins on everyone’s backs to see how many we could attach before they figured it out,” Muniz explained, sharing a laugh over their childish games.

Competition on set only intensified those bonds. “There was an intense foosball table for a while and later a ping-pong table, which was perhaps a mistake,” Muniz said, recalling how they could become so engrossed in the games that filming would often fall by the wayside. “We probably could have gone pro,” he joked, highlighting the fun they had during downtime.

After seven seasons and a total of 151 episodes, the conclusion of *Malcolm in the Middle* proved to be a more emotional affair than Muniz anticipated. With a month’s notice about the impending series finale, he felt grateful for the advance warning. “Being able to prepare for it made everything a bit easier,” he shared.

However, nothing could have quite prepared him for the moment the series wrapped. As he looked around at his colleagues, comprised of cast and crew members who had become like family over the years, Muniz found himself overcome with emotion. “I remember starting to cry as soon as the last shot was being filmed,” he said, noting that it wasn’t merely because of the scene being shot, but rather, the weight of finality hit him like a wave.

Even the farewell celebration was bittersweet, as Muniz recalled lingering in the soundstage long after others had left. “Jane [Kaczmarek] and I were the last people there,” he said. Seeing the set transformed for the wrap party evoked a sense of nostalgia and finality. “It wasn’t as messy as Malcolm’s family home was, which made it feel surreal.”

Looking back on the experience, Muniz reflects that his time on *Malcolm in the Middle* remains one of the most meaningful chapters of his life. “It was an incredible experience,” he concluded.
