**Tragic Accident Claims Life of Yorkshire Grandfather**

In a heartbreaking incident, Roland Krumins, a 66-year-old grandfather, lost his life in a tragic accident involving his vehicle in Halifax, Yorkshire, on 6 April 2025. Known for his warmth and dedication to family, Mr Krumins had just stepped out of his SUV when the vehicle began to roll downhill, leading to an unfortunate series of events that resulted in his death.
An inquest into the incident revealed that Krumins had forgotten to engage the electronic emergency brake of his SUV. According to Assistant Coroner Angela Brocklehurst from Bradford Coroner’s Court, the cause of death was determined to be crush asphyxia, and the incident has been officially classified as accidental. Krumins had stopped his vehicle for an unknown reason, and as he exited, the car rolled forward.
The SUV eventually collided with a wall, resulting in Krumins being trapped between the driver’s door and the vehicle itself. Investigations indicated that the vehicle was left in neutral with the keys still in the ignition, and the handbrake disengaged. PC Bhupinder Sood, a Forensic Collision Investigator, stated during the proceedings that once the vehicle started moving, Krumins would have been unable to halt its momentum. He remarked, “Someone isn’t going to stop a vehicle at that weight,” further emphasising the rapidity with which the situation escalated.
Christopher Turner, a local resident, discovered Krumins shortly after the accident and described the scene: the SUV’s hazard lights were flashing and the driver’s door was ajar. Upon returning just moments later, Turner was shocked to find Krumins “laid half in and half out of the vehicle.” Emergency services arrived promptly but found Krumins unconscious, with no pulse, leading to the heartbreaking confirmation of his death at the scene.
No witnesses were present during the incident, and CCTV footage revealed that there had been no prior irregularities in Krumins’ driving behaviour. This lack of evidence surrounding the moments leading up to the tragedy has left family and friends in a state of disbelief and sorrow.
Renowned for his dedication to his career, Krumins spent an impressive 45 years in the retail sector, during which he worked his way up to a managerial position, earning the respect and friendship of numerous colleagues. His wife, Melanie, revealed that the pair met nearly four decades ago on a blind date and subsequently married in 1990. Together, they raised two daughters and were later overjoyed to welcome grandchildren into their lives.
Following the inquest, Melanie offered a heartfelt tribute to her husband, expressing how deeply he will be missed. “He was just the perfect gentleman,” she remarked, adding that his world revolved around family. She described the profound impact he had on their lives and how much he meant to them as a husband, father, and grandfather.
