In a significant development for grizzly bear conservation, a female bear relocated to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) has given birth to two cubs, signalling a promising step forward for genetic diversity between the populations in Wyoming and Montana.

The announcement was made by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) in a press release dated April 8, detailing that the bear, originally from the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem (NCDE), was first relocated to Wyoming two years ago. This spring, biologists were thrilled to spot the bear emerging from her den with her offspring, believed to be her first litter since the relocation.

Biologists confirmed the sighting during a routine monitoring operation, utilising radio-telemetry. They were able to capture aerial images of the mother and her cubs while observing them at their den site. This birth is considered an early indicator of the success of ongoing conservation efforts aimed at enhancing genetic diversity between two of the largest grizzly populations in the United States.

Christy Clark, the FWP Director, expressed optimism regarding the event. She stated, “This is concrete evidence that Montana and Wyoming are committed to sustaining a recovered population of grizzly bears.” Clark described the birth of the cubs as a significant success for long-term genetic diversity initiatives.
The relocated female grizzly was one of two bears moved to the GYE as part of a collaborative effort between FWP, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD), and Yellowstone National Park in 2021. At the time, the bear was approximately four years old, a stage when female grizzlies are on the cusp of reproductive maturity. Her companion, who was relocated alongside her, was classified as a subadult.
Cecily Costello, a FWP researcher, shared insights into the timing of the cubs’ arrival, noting that female grizzlies typically have their first litters between the ages of five and six. Despite the anticipation of newborns, Costello mentioned that the bear’s extensive movements in the preceding months raised some concerns about her potential for successful reproduction. “We wondered if that energy expenditure might reduce her chances of reproducing,” she said. Fortunately, photographs of the bear indicate that she is in good health, suggesting a positive outlook for future reproductive efforts.
The relocation of the bear is part of a broader agreement among Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho aimed at overcoming genetic isolation within grizzly populations. Introducing new genetic material is deemed vital for bolstering the long-term resilience of the species. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to wildlife management that prioritises ecological health.
While the news surrounding the cubs is largely encouraging, experts do advise caution regarding their survival. Current data indicates that the annual survival rates for grizzly cubs are just above 50%, and these rates tend to be lower for first-time mothers. Costello acknowledged the uncertainties ahead, stating, “So, we do have to wait and see about the survival of this litter. Even if this litter does not survive, we expect she will be successful in the future.”
The successful birth of these cubs is not just a victory for the immediate stakeholders involved in conservation efforts; it also brings hope for the future of grizzlies in the Greater Yellowstone region. With continued collaborative efforts and careful monitoring, the prospects for this iconic species could improve significantly, ensuring that grizzly bears remain a vital part of the North American wilderness for generations to come.
