A 15-year-old boy sustained serious injuries after tumbling down a 50-foot embankment in Troutdale, Oregon, on April 4. The incident occurred during an afternoon hike near Southeast Stark Street, close to the Sandy River. Following a challenging rescue operation, the teen was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Despite falling such a considerable distance, the young hiker managed to remain conscious and, crucially, was able to call for help. Gresham Fire Captain Travis Soles explained that the ability to provide his location via mobile phone played a vital role in expediting the rescue.

First responders faced significant challenges as they navigated through dense tree coverage to reach the injured teenager. Using information gleaned from the boy’s call, they devised a plan to approach him by boat. Upon reaching the scene, the rescue team concluded that a high-angle rope system would be needed to hoist the boy to safety.
Captain Soles provided insight into the technical aspects of the rescue, stating, “They lower with a rope system, a rescuer and a Stokes basket down over the side of the cliff.” The process involved securing the injured boy in a Stokes basket, enabling the rescuers to lift him safely back over the cliff’s edge.
The teenager suffered multiple injuries, including a fractured skull and a broken femur. He was visibly shaken when he was finally hoisted up to safety. A fire official commented on the incident’s severity, highlighting the presence of numerous rocks and trees that could have caused further harm.
“This young man is very fortunate,” the official observed, noting how the terrain posed significant risks during the fall. The Gresham Fire Department later reported that the boy’s resilience and cooperation significantly contributed to the success of the operation.
In the aftermath of the rescue, Captain Soles praised the teenager’s bravery. “He was very tough,” he remarked, emphasising how well the youth managed to assist first responders during what must have been a frightening experience.
As efforts continue to highlight the importance of safety precautions when hiking, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can accompany outdoor activities. The quick actions of the first responders and the boy’s presence of mind undoubtedly played vital roles in preventing what could have been a far more tragic outcome.
The local community is rallying to support the young boy as he recovers from his injuries, showcasing the spirit of resilience and compassion that often shines through in times of crisis.
