A Florida couple has been arrested for allegedly perpetrating a significant fraud scheme that has left numerous individuals out of pocket to the tune of over $200,000. Antonio Diaz, aged 65, and Maria Blasco Diaz, 64, were apprehended by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday, April 8, after an investigation led by the department’s Organised Crimes Bureau unveiled their purported exploitation of personal relationships to secure funds for luxury goods and travel packages.

According to the arrest affidavit, the Diaz couple enticed their acquaintances into believing that they could procure discounted luxury items including high-end watches, jewellery, and travel deals. Investigators assert that their alleged victims were duped into transferring a total of $44,910 for what was promised to be an all-inclusive travel package. The package reportedly included cruise tickets, drink packages, room upgrades, hotel accommodations, transportation, and travel insurance.

The supposed cruise was set to depart on July 9, 2023. However, as the departure date loomed, the victims found themselves repeatedly requesting travel documents. Maria Diaz is said to have provided a myriad of excuses to explain the delay, which increasingly aroused suspicion among the victims. On July 3, Maria visited one female victim at her workplace, claiming that her associate employed by the cruise line had been dismissed and that she herself was under scrutiny for allegedly overselling travel packages to friends and family.
In a dramatic twist, Maria reportedly issued partial repayments in the form of cheques, promising that the remainder would follow at a later date. However, these cheques were subsequently discovered to be drawn from a newly established bank account that lacked sufficient funds. This alarming revelation reinforced the victims’ concerns and prompted further investigation.
During a bond court session on Wednesday, one of the victims—who spoke out on behalf of her elderly parents, who also fell victim to the scam—described the anguish caused by the couple’s betrayal. “Our whole family was scammed by her, through friendship,” the victim lamented. “It was somebody who we trusted wholly.” This sentiment was echoed by the fears and frustrations experienced by approximately 20 family members who had also been misled into believing they were booked for the same cruise.
The fraudulent activities were not limited solely to travel packages. In 2022, Maria allegedly extended a “friends and family” discount of 50 per cent on luxury watches, leveraging her husband’s position at a jewellery store. Victims reportedly placed deposits for a total of 16 Rolex watches and one Patek Philippe, accumulating costs of around £138,948.40. Again, delays were justified by Maria, who made claims regarding shipping mistakes and quality control checks that supposedly held up the orders.
In March 2023, a woman provided Maria with a cheque for £3,000, intending to purchase a pair of lab-created diamond earrings. However, she was told that she could not collect the items until they passed quality control. Victims further allege that they had combined treasure troves of jewellery amounting to £13,401.45 that they also never received, thus contributing to the total alleged theft of £200,259.85 inflicted by the Diazes.
Following their court appearance, authorities have charged the couple with multiple felony offences, including organised fraud exceeding £50,000 and first-degree grand theft. Each suspect has been granted a bond set at £35,000.
As this situation continues to unfold, investigators urge anyone else who may have fallen prey to the couple’s alleged fraudulent schemes to come forward. The societal impact of such deceit has highlighted the vulnerability of victims who place their trust in familiar relationships only to be betrayed in pursuit of luxury.
The couple’s attorney has yet to issue a statement regarding the allegations, leaving many questions unanswered as the community grapples with the implications of this distressing case. Overcoming such betrayal will surely take time for those affected, who now must navigate not just the financial fallout but the emotional repercussions of this daunting ordeal.
