On the evening of April 7, a remarkable phenomenon captivated the attention of over 200 residents in the Philadelphia region as they reported witnessing a brilliant fireball streak across the sky. In a fascinating explanation of the event, NASA confirmed it was, in fact, a meteor that had been travelling at hypersonic speeds.

The incident unfolded when Nicholas Samuelian, while driving on Route 70 in Medford Lakes, noticed what he initially thought was sunlight reflecting off an aircraft. His surprise turned to astonishment as he watched the extraordinary light show. “I didn’t know what to think at first. I’ve never seen anything like that, so it was one of the craziest things I have ever seen,” he recalled.


As Samuelian continued to observe, he saw the meteor start to break apart, revealing flashes of light. Recognising the significance of the moment, he quickly retrieved his phone to document the spectacle. His proactive action allowed him to capture the unfolding event on video, which has since been shared on social media platforms.
Nicholas Brucato, another observer from Manchester Township, also recorded the meteor. “I had my phone in my hand thankfully and started recording it. I thought it was pretty cool, and then two to three minutes later, I heard a big boom,” he stated. He expressed uncertainty about whether the sound was associated with the meteor, which has become a common thread in the reports shared online.
Several social media accounts echoed Brucato’s experience, with numerous individuals commenting on the sound of a loud boom accompanying their sighting. According to NASA, this audible phenomenon can often be linked to meteors travelling at extraordinary speeds. When meteors enter the Earth’s atmosphere, the resulting pressure wave, combined with intense heat and friction, can cause them to fragment and create a loud, explosive sound.
NASA further elaborated that the peak “fireball season” in the northern hemisphere tends to occur between February and April, making this sighting particularly timely. The agency traced the trajectory of the meteor, noting that it was first detected at approximately 48 miles above the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Mastic Beach on Long Island. Subsequently, it moved southwest at a staggering speed of 30,000 mph, covering a distance of 117 miles through the upper atmosphere.
The meteor continued its descent until it ultimately disintegrated about 27 miles above Galloway, just north of Atlantic City. The event not only provided a stunning visual display for those who witnessed it but also added to the collective understanding of meteoric activity in the skies above.
