Meghan Trainor has opened up about her experience of welcoming her third child, daughter Mikey Moon, via surrogate in January. Having previously carried her sons, Riley and Barry, Trainor revealed that her decision to use a surrogate stemmed from health concerns. She explained that she was wrestling with challenges related to her health and the potential onset of an autoimmune disease. “We had heartbreaking, big decisions to make,” she said of her discussions with husband Daryl Sabara. “So, after many conversations, we realised that using a surrogate was the safest option for our family.”

Despite the positive outcome, Trainor admitted that the experience of not carrying Mikey herself was a trying one. “Every day, knowing she was alive in someone else’s body, we questioned, ‘Is she okay?’” Trainor expressed, revealing how anxiety often took hold during the waiting period. However, she credited their surrogate, whom she described as incredibly supportive, for helping ease their minds; they were able to maintain open communication throughout the pregnancy.
Alongside the emotional toll of not bearing her child, the singer also confronted her fears regarding possible public scrutiny. Trainor acknowledged she was aware of the backlash she might face, especially after previously being the subject of online criticism related to her appearance. “I didn’t look at the comments,” she explained, emphasising her awareness of the potential negative reactions. “I knew I would face hate for changing, and I could just envision it – ‘They’re going to hate this decision too.’” The concern over how her daughter would be perceived upon entering the world added to the overwhelming feelings of anxiety.
Despite the worries, Trainor found solace in the support of her team and her husband. “My team was with me, my therapist was with me, and everyone was so supportive,” she noted. Sabara’s perspective was encouraging as well, as he reassured her that naysayers should not dictate their family’s choices. “My husband said everyone can ‘suck our ass,’ and that this was the healthiest way.”
While the emotional journey was tumultuous, Trainor ultimately felt positive about the decision they made. “We cried a lot, but it was the best thing for our family,” she shared. Importantly, Trainor also discussed the practical benefits of using a surrogate, noting that avoiding the physical recovery after a C-section has allowed her to be more present with her children. “I could be so present with her and with my other kids,” she remarked, highlighting the joys of spending quality time with her family without the added stress of physical limitations.
Addressing her followers, Trainor mentioned that she chose to announce Mikey’s arrival publicly to prevent any leaks about the birth. “They warned me it could leak through the hospital,” she explained, reinforcing her desire to control the narrative around their family’s news just as she had done with the births of her other children.
Trainor’s candid sharing of her journey underscores the complexities many families face when considering how to grow. As she continues to navigate motherhood and the challenges of fame, she remains focused on what matters most: her children and their well-being. The singer’s willingness to voice her struggles not only normalises the discussion surrounding surrogacy but also encourages other parents to embrace their unique circumstances.
Overall, Meghan Trainor’s experience sheds light on the multifaceted nature of parenthood—highlighting that every family’s path to welcoming a child is distinct and often filled with both joy and challenges. As she embarks on this new chapter with Mikey, Trainor sets an example of resilience and hope.
