The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) announced Engel’s detention through a social media post. According to their report, deputies from the McCurtain County Sheriff’s Office responded to an urgent call regarding a suspicious death shortly before 1 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered 21-year-old Braden Uhlmann suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, Uhlmann later succumbed to his injuries. Engel has since been charged with second-degree murder and is currently held at the McCurtain County Jail.

Details surrounding the incident suggest it occurred during Engel’s bachelor party, which was attended by several friends. Local news outlet KXII-TV reported that during the festivities, Engel and his friends heard unusual knocking sounds and noticed a shadowy figure outside the cabin. Engel indicated to authorities that, fearing for their safety, he fired a shot from a 9mm handgun.
Following the gunfire, Engel and another companion ventured outside to investigate and found Uhlmann lying on the porch, gravely injured from a gunshot wound to the chest. As officers arrived at the scene, Engel reportedly made unprompted remarks, acknowledging that he was the individual who had discharged the firearm.
The tragic nature of this incident has sent shockwaves through the local community. Friends and family of Uhlmann are mourning his loss, while Engel now faces serious legal repercussions. As the investigation continues, local law enforcement is gathering more details to form a clearer understanding of the circumstances that led to this fatal shooting.
Engel posted a bond set at $250,000 and has since been released from custody. The case has raised significant public interest, highlighting the potential dangers associated with firearms and the often-unpredictable outcomes of situations involving alcohol and celebration.
The OSBI is continuing its inquiry into the events that unfolded that night. As the community seeks answers, further information from the McCurtain County Sheriff’s Office is anticipated to shed more light on the ongoing investigation and the context surrounding this heartbreaking tragedy.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with gun ownership and the serious implications that can arise from reckless decisions. As the case develops, both Engel and Uhlmann’s families are undoubtedly grappling with the consequences of that fateful night.
