A 35-year-old man from New York, Robert Buskey Jr., received a sentence of 27 years to life imprisonment following the tragic starvation death of his five-year-old daughter, Charlotte. In January, Buskey pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder and the criminal sale of a controlled substance to a child, as confirmed by a statement from the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office.
During his sentencing on April 3, Buskey acknowledged his culpability, stating, “I deserve it,” while he expressed an understanding of the reasons for his prosecution. He described his actions as born out of a “depraved indifference to human life,” which ultimately led to the fatal neglect of his daughter.
Authorities responded to a call at Buskey’s residence on April 14, 2024, where they discovered Charlotte’s severely emaciated body locked away in her bedroom. The conditions were described in the press statement as a “house of horrors.” In addition to the locked bedroom, investigators found a makeshift cage in the dining room that had been used to confine Buskey’s three-year-old son.
Prosecutors revealed that Charlotte had suffered prolonged neglect and malnutrition. She and her brother had been completely isolated from the outside world for months, devoid of contact with family, medical attention, or schooling. The legal representatives outlined that Buskey kept the children in confinement to facilitate his drug use and video gaming without interruption.
Remarkably, despite food being readily available within the house, the evidence indicated that Charlotte was locked in her room with only a small pack-and-play for comfort. Tragically, she died from severe dehydration and malnutrition, having been deprived of food and water significantly before her demise.
In addition to the charges related to his daughter’s death, Buskey was also found guilty of administering drugs to his children, with both children testing positive for cocaine. This alarming finding positioned Buskey’s actions not just as neglectful but indicative of a profound failure to protect his children.
Buskey’s lawyer, Joseph Litz, sought to present his client’s history of drug dependency and mental health issues as mitigating factors during the court proceedings. Litz contended that other figures in the children’s lives might have intervened effectively to avert the tragic outcome. However, Judge Matthew Sypniewski rejected this argument, condemning Buskey’s behaviour as indicative of “absolute narcissism,” demonstrating a stark lack of empathy for his starving daughter.
Under the terms of the plea deal, Buskey has accepted the maximum sentence possible and waived his right to appeal. In an additional protective measure, he has been placed under an order of protection that prohibits him from any contact with his surviving son.
